American politics

Happening even quicker than I thought; they’re already starting to eat themselves. Hilarious.

The irony that this disagreement is centred around the immigration question is delicious. The tech bro nazis say the immigrant workforce is critical and the maga nazis say you promised to deport all brown people. Elon being an illegal immigrant himself is the cherry on top.

If the Democrats had any savvy at all, they would jump two-footed into this fight and help drive a wedge between the warring factions. Unfortunately, they are more likely to call for restraint and compromise from both sides, as they still haven't learned to exploit their opponent's weaknesses.

Right wingers deliberately underfund the NHS and encourage privitization of profitable parts of it and then argue that it is a 'millstione' and should be got rid of .Right out of the Tory play book.
It's been just as brick under Labour too. This is the third Labour govt of my lifetime and I've yet to see an NHS that comes within around 50% of the quality of service I've seen in the US.

There's a very good reason why no politically serious countries copy such a ridiculous model.

How far? As far as we can in the opposite direction.

He isn't going to get Canada, Greenland or Panama despite the hot air he is blowing and why would we want to be subsumed into that brickshow when we have just extricated ourselves from the EU?

I believe the commonality between the people and societies makes it inevitable.

You only need to look at the amazing depth of interest in US politics evidenced by the thread here on our football forum.

Good article from USA Today re why the democrats lost the election.

They mainly lost because they didn't understand where the fight was (on social media and via non-traditional platforms). Trump made a deal with the devil in getting Musk onboard. Without his X platform and billionaire buddies, I think Trump fails. Musk gave him vital inroads into social media that he had effectively lost the route map for. He will, of course, pay a big price, as will everyone. It would not surprise me to see Trump look relatively moderate in a year as he tries to contain Musk, a beyond wealthy narcissist who has proven to the world (and sadlt, himself) that government is absolutely transactional providing you have the cash.

@thfcsteff what’s funny about that article? Do you not think the democrats are out of touch with the rest of America when it comes to certain issues?

I think it is a simplistic view. I don't take USA Today seriously TBH. I agree that there have been major issues within the Democratic Party, and I have my own views on the paths and policies taken, however their biggest failure again was communication and infighting. Time and time again the Republicans band together and shove their whacko bus over the finish line, saving all infighting until later. Do you think many Republicans believe Kennedy is a wise choice for health czar? Nah. But they know they want to fight about it once their party is in power. Dems have never gauged that.

Fair enough. I don’t live in America, but USA Today have usually been pretty fair and down the middle from what I know about them. The democrats do have an air of superiority about them which isn’t a good look. I’d agree there are more reasons as to why they lost the election, Kamala Harris should have done Joe Rogan’s podcast for example, that’s where a lot of the eyeballs and listeners are in the modern world (podcasts in general I mean). Was going on SNL really the best use of her time when 90% of the audience are already in the bag for her? In football terms, it’s like trying to win the league but refusing to play any away games.

I also think the democrats just aren’t that adept when it comes to politics. Obama tried to get Ruth Bader Ginsburg to retire years before she died so he could replace her with a democratic judge but she refused, then she inevitably passed away when at that point, the republicans could replace her with their own pick for the Supreme Court.

Yes, because he wants to hurt the same people they do, everyone who isn't a straight, white, Christian.

Nah. That is a total misread of what on going on over there. He is taking the right's framing of things and running with it. He's totally wrong on the underlying reasons why the dems lost.

The reason the Democrats lost is because they chose two awful candidates in a row. Biden was an awful candidate and incoherent president. He only won the last election because people were sick of Trump. But then they realised that they'd rather a narcissistic gobsh*te who knows how to make money in power than a senile corpse who is losing them their jobs and their security....

This. The dems are fighting an election from 20 years ago.

The one under-appreciated explanation for Trump winning is simply that the people who voted for him believed a wide array of false things.
It is not trans issues, or people being 'woke' (whatever the fudge that even means) or even so called kitchen table issues. It is misinformation.

I highly recommend this piece...

A huge own goal.

Great article in Rolling Stone about how it's clear now after paying double for twitter how Musk became the leading distributer of lies....

It's def the new battleground

It’s a big part of the reason why they lost. The democrats come across as elitist and out of touch. There a variety of reasons as to why they lost, but it’s short sighted IMO to dismiss it. When you’re in a hole you should stop digging but the democrats don’t make things easy for themselves.

It is partly to do with that IMO. The democrats lost a gubernatorial election in 2021 supposedly because the incumbent democrat governor told parents that they shouldn’t have any said in what is taught in schools and the parents said oh yeah, we’ll vote you out then. Granted it is not the only reason why democrats lose elections, but it plays a part. They’ve also had some really terrible candidates.
