Brennan Johnson

Yesterday Porro put in whipped, curled crosses from deep.
Even when facing a defender up close, he knocked the ball 90 degrees to his right, and then dug out a curling cross around the defender, much like Beckham used to do.

When Murphy was facing Spence for the second goal, he shaped like he was going to cross 'beyond' Spence's lunge but then cut the ball back through Spence's legs for Isak to score.

When facing a defender, Johnson does neither, he either hits a very vanilla ball straight into the defender, or knocks the ball 5 yards in front of himself and then strikes a vanilla ball into the defender.

He really needs to learn one or both of these options.

I fully agree that Johnson has to develop to be a regular starter for a team wanting to be where we want to be. But I also think that will take time.

He's struggling more now as we're struggling more as a team. That makes sense for the kind of player he is. He's not a "do it on your own" type player, yet at least.

I can agree with that he is still fairly young at 23. Lets hope he can push on.

Plus needs to learn how to press effectively and work defensively. He has improved slightly but he needs to do more. As it stands, if he doesn’t score then does he do enough for the team? With our tactical setup it requires all players press effectively if we are to be successful.

I think it's close to impossible to judge if players are improving or not when a lot of them are playing a lot, probably feeling fatigued and we're struggling as a team.

As things have been so far I don't think he does enough for the team if he doesn't score.

Did make me cringe after he scored and stood there like Eric fudging Cantona.

Well done lad, you scored a goal against Tamworth after doing fudge all for the rest of the game.

Johnson, Werner and Son should not be anywhere near the first team, we are literally playing with 9/10 men when ever any of those play.
To me it's the lack of balance. (Not only that with Werner, he's been awful for a while).

Too many players lacking the quality to do things on their own, do the unexpected (in a positive way), get past a man, open up space.

In the Tamworth game Johnson, Werner and then Moore lacking match fitness (particularly first half). But then also Sarr who sometimes struggles to really impact the game in situations like this. Bissouma who did great work deep, but doesn't penetrate into the final third. Reguilon too imo lacks that.

Put almost all the creative responsibility on Maddison and Porro. Leaves us very unbalanced and struggling. Even against a team we're much better than.

Thought he was mostly poor. His goals mask average overall play. Bit like Alli in a sense, but Alli scored world class goals, not just tap ins like 90% of Johnson’s are. For £50m we really need more from him.

11 goals +4 assists from a winger in a side struggling?

I get Johnson is a limited player, but I'm not sure expectation can be higher unless we are looking for a completely different profile of player

We need him to work harder off of the ball. He has improved this season but as we press from the front he needs to be at it or our whole press doesn’t work. WTF were his two crosses about too?! It seems like he has one play which is to cut into the box and score, which works well but he needs more to his all round game

For his goal against Tamworth, it looked like he'd been moved into the middle, so maybe that's his future? Certainly can't fault his shooting accuracy. Feels like most of his assists are when he's in the box too?

Does get you wondering how the game would have gone with Johnson central, Werner left and Mikey right? Even better Yang and Mikey sharing the wide duties.

Johnson would never be a physical number 9, but I bet his movement would be quite tasty.

Felt like Werner kept drifting to the left anyway!
