Christian Eriksen

Anyone see similarities between the way Harry introduced Modric and the way Tim is handling Eriksen? In both cases, the players were stuck out on the wings, away from the congested and often hectic centre of midfield in favour of a freer role out wide. In Modric's case, that allowed him to adapt to the Prem and eventually hardened him up enough to allow him to be moved back into the centre. I wonder if we'll see the same thing happening with Eriksen soon. In any case, great performance today: got an assist and the winning goal at Old Trafford while also helping out Rose defensively: a fine performance. Well done, son. :D

So pleased we signed him. I don't think he was a key player we wanted but just got him in as he was available at a decent price. Thank fuk we did! Compliments the bigger more powerful players with deft touches and passing. Quickly becoming an essential part of the side.

A goal, an assist and a strong defensive performance, I think this was definitely his best game for us

Wait, what?

I've been thinking the same the last few days, just haven't gotten around to posting it. All in all I see alot of similarities from Ramos/Redknapp here! That didn't turn out to bad did it.

When he first played a few games and it looked as though we were trying to peg him in the #10 hole, someone on here said his best position was the deep lying central midfield playmaker. ie the Modric role.

Whoever that was may have been on to something.

Other than the goal and assist I didn't think the United game was his best. I expect more from him on the ball, perhaps my expectations are a bit high? I just think he has more in him than that. He worked reasonably hard defensively, kept going for the full match. But he also left Rose completely exposed when Smalling was allowed to run through. If Lloris didn't save that I think people would have been furious with Eriksen.

He has a lot of talent, could end up playing in various positions. At this stage he's not as good defensively at Modric, but he's significantly younger than Modric was when he became a top class PL central midfielder.

I said thats where it looked like being his best position when he started out at Ajax. He was controlling games, however he looked better as a number 10 when moved forward.

I always thought he was Modric esque... however he has more goals in his locker thats for sure

I actually think that narrow-left role suits him more than it did Modric, and the CM one less.

Modric was always very nifty, just like Mousa, but even quicker, and was also extremely dogged in his defence of the ball and use of his body, areas which I think Eriksen is significantly worse at.

On the other hand, Eriksen looks much more comfortable between the lines. Modric was not one for a defence-splitting cheeky reverse on the edge of the box, he liked to play longer balls and lobbed passes over the top (talking generally, this was by no means a rule).

Most importantly, Eriksen has a very good shot and his capable of placing it, curling it, and drilling it. Modric always looked very limp when striking the ball, meaning he was never really a threat coming in from the left, whereas Eriksen cutting in can set him up for a shot as well as a pass, adding a bit of unpredictability. He is also quicker that Modric which is obviously useful in wide areas.

Don't get me wrong, I think Eriksen has all the attributes to be a great deep-lying playmaker with practice, and we may well use him there under certain circumstances, but he has really impressed me coming in from the left, moreso than Modric. Which is why I don't think he will be making the same switch inside for the long term.

EDIT: Eriksen did play a bit of a deeper role at Ajax, but this was as part of a 3. I don't think he could cope with playing in a 2 as well as Modric did. Unless we are without both Dembele and Paulinho, or tactical reasons require it, I think Eriksen would be more useful at LM when playing 2 in the centre.

My only issue is his defensive ability/work rate, especially with Rose outside him. Sandro at CM would help in this regard but Eriksen needs to apply himself a bit more.

I was most impressed with the way he wanted to get to the ball first... as soon as he saw the deflection on the cross you could see he put in a second burst of acceleration, allowing him to just beat Valencia to the ball... Rooney was screaming at Valencia to warn him but it was too late. Great hunger from Eriksen

Hence we need a better LB than Rose.

Our FB's have gotten a lot of **** over the years, but we tend to leave our FBs exposed at times, either because our wide player in front has cut in, or has committed with pace so far up that the FB is completely alone on counter (see Lennon/Bale/Modric/Eriksen/etc.)

If a clearly better full back is available and affordable I'm all for it.

Rose is good, have some faith.

He's alright. He's the same age as Walker, I'm yet to see him show that he's at a similar level in terms of talent. Not a bad player at all though and I'm all for being patient as long as a player is improving.
