Christian Eriksen

Tottenham Hotspur's Christian Eriksen produces best ever display?

Was Christian Eriksen's performance against Sunderland his best ever GAME for the club?

Tottenham Hotspur star Christian Eriksen hit yet another late winning goal to lead the club to a 2-1 win over Sunderland.

It was his eighth Premier League strike of the season, to make him the club's TOP scorer in the division with eight goals to his name.

It puts Eriksen level with Harry Kane, although in all competitions the England under-21 star is up to 16 goals and Nacer Chadli on nine, according to BBC figures.

Yet it is not just the goalscoring which Eriksen brings to his side. Against Sunderland he created more chances from open play than in any other Premier League GAME he has played for the club in two seasons.

-----------------------Team-----------------Match------------------ Chances created from open play-----Mins Played
Christian Eriksen--Tottenham----Tottenham vs Sunderland--------------------6--------------------------------90
Christian Eriksen--Tottenham----Tottenham vs Burnley------------------------5--------------------------------89
Christian Eriksen--Tottenham----Tottenham vs Saudi Sportswashing Machine---------------------5--------------------------------90
Christian Eriksen--Tottenham----Hull City vs Tottenham-----------------------5--------------------------------90
Christian Eriksen--Tottenham----Tottenham vs Sunderland--------------------4--------------------------------90
Christian Eriksen--Tottenham----West Ham vs Tottenham---------------------4------------------------------- 90

Including set pieces, Eriksen's most prolific GAME for key passes came against Saudi Sportswashing Machine this season at White Hart Lane when he created nine chances in total, but only five were from open play - and Tottenham lost THE GAME.

In this game against Sunderland, Eriksen not only put together a number of chances for his teammates to try to score from, but seized the moment himself to hit a decisive winning goal.

At only 22-years-old, Eriksen is marking himself out as not only a star of the FUTURE but one of the top players in the league at present, and it's an exciting thought for Tottenham fans to consider how good he could become if he continues to improve.

Looking at that stats, he really should be scoring more than 1 goal in a lot of the matches. He is more than capable of doing that.

It would be nice but Eriksen averages 3 shots per game and converts 14% of them into goals which is an impressive ratio for a player who mostly shoots from outside the penalty area, actually 1% better than our previous long range specialist...

Eriksen since 2013/14: 15 goals from 110 shots (65% of attempts outside pen area) = 14% shot conversion rate
Bale during 2012/13: 21 goals from 165 shots (59% of attempts outside pen area) = 13% shot conversion rate

Eriksen since 2013/14: 120 key passes + 9 assists over 3805 minutes = 29 minutes per chance created
Bale during 2012/13: 75 key passes + 4 assists over 2925 minutes = 37 minutes per chance created

Pity he can't take a corner ... :)

I've noticed this fashion recently for the looped corner to the back post. Perhaps we should station Faz there and get Eriksen the Viking to target him.

For over a decade now whilst watching games, we've referred to our corners as their goal kicks... ;)

If Eriksen should get injured we'd be well and truly in he **** at the moment. Crucial player for us.

Yeah he's had a decent season so far there was times when i questioned his commitment and he would flicker in and out of games but he seems to have found his position now in the team.

We've been pretty lucky with injuries so far this season. However, I can see now why we are trying to get Kevin Mirallas, with him Kane and eriksen thats a very good attacking 3 and then Chadli and Lamela to back up and rotate

As you guys have mentioned Eriksens corners are terrible, if i was poch id have him practising all week!

To be honest, corners and set pieces and invariably a bit c*** from all teams. How many goals from set pieces do Chelsea & Emirates Marketing Project score?

Man Utd used to score loads when they had Beckham taking the corners. Not really any more.

We score the odd goal from a corner, much the same as every other team.

If this were American football we could wheel on Sheringham and Anderton just for the corners.

Big call here but for me Erisken has been a better player for us than VDV.

VDV was a great player but I think people sugarcoat his weaknesses due to his character and the affinity he had with the fans. For me (esp considering his age) Eriksen probably already is and will go onto to be a better player than VDV.

Although VDV was capable of ludicrous pieces of skill, i think Erisken is more consistent and his technique is right up there. Erisken takes up better positions (VDV used to spend half of games picking the ball off our centre halves and spraying it 50 yards, often leaving our striker isolated) Erisken drops deep to link play really well but is very astute in getting into more spaces where he can do damage for larger parts of the game.

VDV was an excellent finisher but for me Erisken is as good and he also has a knack for doing it when we need him most/in the big games. This was a trait that VDV had, but for me Eriksen is right up there in that respect.

Also Erisken is more mobile, athletic and gets around the pitch far better than VDV did. Both players have a propensity to drift in and out of games but Eriksen is more involved during an average 90mins.

This isn't a slight on VDV as he was a great player for us, but interested to know what people think about this assessment?

The comparison with VDV is a tough one for me, I had a great feeling around that time he spent with us, not just down to him but the way the team performed too.

I would say they are both in the same ballpark but VDV just edges if for xfactor

VDV had a much bigger personality, helped lift the crowd more than Eriksen

Eriksen is still in potential land, in time he might be better, but to Grays point, VDV will always have that nutters factor ...

If Eriksen starts banging them in against the Scum like VDV, he might convert my point of view.

I was about to say all Eriksen has to do is score a couple against the scum and I'd completely agree. Maybe a brace on the 21st would be a nice start! I agree that VDV had more negative points. Eriksen has brought his 'inconsistent' tag with him from Ajax but appears to be turning the corner. VDV was simply woeful pretty much every time he was played on the right (which was far too often!). The comparisons are certainly a lot closer now than they were at the start of the season. One thing VDV had in his locker was the Beckhamesque 30yd pass.

VdV was excellent for us but have to take into account the fact that he came to us in the prime of his career, aged 27 years, and (as you say) benefited from having higher quality team-mates to help him.

Eriksen is still just 22 years old and I'm sure that he'd love to be lining up alongside Bale and Modric, plus a healthy(ish) Ledley and a motivated Ade.

Hopefully by next season Poch will have assembled a squad of a similar calibre and Eriksen will be providing us with Kodak moments like this...
