Clement Lenglet

Fair player but not one I lose sleep over not staying. Never stood out as dependable, more the type that needed all parts around him doing well to perform than step up individually. We have too many of them types as it is.

Big old market out there, I wouldn't be worried about him being the only option available in world football just yet
I thought he stepped up in terms of being a creative outlet on the left hand side. He was given the ball and progressed well with it and put in some super crosses creating chances and the odd assist - the one away at Brentford sticks out in my mind where Kane scored a header from his cross. For 6m euros I would have taken him as a squad player, certainly over Dier. But if we have what are considered better targets then all good....

I'd fudging take Lenglet as a starter over Dier in squad

Big risk by the club, we will need at least 3 CB's (Assuming Lenglet, Dier, Sanchez, Rodon, Tanganga leave)

So would I but we should have neither. It’s like asking would you rather put socks on or pants on covered in custard. You wouldn’t want either. Just because one might be slightly more tolerable doesn’t mean it’s a pick you should take when you can go out and just buy clothes not soiled in custard.

Although Ben would want both.

I can understand the concept, I just question the execution of it. If we sell all the players that we shouldn't have, you will effectively have one CB (Romero?). So we need to bring in at least 3 CB's, probably two who can start (as Romero has injuries), all new to club, some will be new to league/country.

Having cover for <£10M who know the league/club and isn't a complete disaster (I think Lenglet can improve, not like Dier/Sanchez) seems too easy to walk away from.

I'd use the same reasoning for keeping Davies around, easy cover that knows the club and won't impact our budget

Lenglet isnt better or worse than what we already have(except Romero). We need world class CBs not average ones, I'm glad we decided against him. Only 2 CBs that need to remain at the club are Romero, as a starter, and Dier as a bench player(HG în Europe, a leader în the dressing room, can also play DM when needed), especially if we return to a 2CB formation. We need to buy 2 world class CBs, easier said than done. If we keep the 3CBs formation, I'd keep Davies too as a bench option, because it would be hard to get so many quality CBs în during a single window. Sanchez and Tanganga need to leave.

I do not necessarily expect us to sign world class defenders, because if I were a world class defender I am not sure I would rush to sign for a club that has not won a trophy for over 15 years. We should however be aiming to sign central defenders with a lot of potential.

We can offer a salary all Serie A, La Liga(except Barca&Real), Bundesliga(except Bayern), Ligue 1(except PSG) teams can't. So basically outside of the PL, there are only about 4 teams all over Europe that can pay what we can pay for a world class defender.

So about 10 clubs can pay more. There isn't 20 world class defenders so it's hard to get them.

And your point is?

We have a recent history of mediocrity, winning fuk all. There are a lot of world class players that would rather go somewhere they feel they can win trophies.

Most world class players you are referring to cannot even remember Spurs winning a trophy in their football career.

Think of all the dosh we could have paid Bastoni and he still did not want to come to us.

So again I ask, your point is?

Thank goodness he has gone. I was really worried for a while that we would do something stupid and re sign him.

seems to be a lot of abuse aimed at Lenglet... not sure he is worthy of all the hate he is receiving from the Twitterati lot.

Romero gets a free pass plenty, he was terrible in several games, as bad as Lenglet in the 'bad' games if not worse. Lenglet was better than Dier and Sanchez and Davies pretty much all season.

Seems a lot of people jumping on the bandwagon. As a backup LCB i have no qualms especially with the sort of money people are talking about.

He doesn't deserve abuse but I haven't seen anything to suggest you would want him as a starting LCB in a 2 personally.

I think Romero gets more freedom because he was Seria A defender of the year in a league that knows abit about defenders, was our defender of the year last season and arguably one of the best in the league and before the WC he was performing well too.

He is also a FT player and not on loan so there will always be some wiggle room for bias

There is only so many spots on the top teams for them. Us having the ability to provide more money and playing alongside Kane, Son etc., with world class facilities will attract. That is how we got Romero. As for Bastoni, italians are more domestic people, so there is that. But I don't think we were far from getting Bastoni. If the UCL season would have gone the other way, and it easily could have, he would have have preffered us this summer over Inter.

Always easier with hindsight to say why Bastoni would stay after our conflicting seasons but last summer was different and also Inter were under pressure to sell someone too. It didn't come off but he was definitely on his way over at one point as my team prepared covid protocols at the time for him as he was due to fly in

We are not that far from getting these top players as some people might think. Bastoni would have been a great signing.

agree. But why folks think we are in the level of Gvadiol or Bastoni, lads, we're not even in European competition this season. I slate Levy more than most but we are not going to be buying the most sought after CBs in World Football.

Absolutely I agree on that

I do however think as fans we live in a slightly blinkered world where we think there are only limited options when I personally believe there are more than people think. I don't think the only options this summer are signing lenglet or be left with Dier
