Wife's work requires two tests per week, 3/4 positive of tbe lft return negative pcr.

What I find funny, is rather than question the validity of the tests, it is you that suddenly 'turn positive'. In most people, this virus is just a bit of cold now. In populated areas with lots of mixing, it is endemic. It is just the vulnerable who need to be careful, if they are jabbed then they should be fine too.
Seems to be like world governments after being burnt are being extra safe over winter. But the ramifications are quite profound. So could see a change in momentum back to liberating life in Jan/Feb.
The media-government interaction will leave people scared and back in their shells though. Sad times.

Don't really know about the situation elsewhere.
In Norway we have the highest number of patients in ICU care and on ventilators we've seen since the start. Overloading the health care system is the breaking point and what must be prevented ultimately imo.
If you're getting to the point where the health care system is overwhelmed and the number of severe cases will increase because of already existing spread there's no way to undo or prevent that.
Extra safe? Maybe. If profound measures are being put in place when there's no risk of overwhelming the health care system. If there's a real risk rather profound measures will be required.
Norway is in a very different situation than the uk. You did excellent at keeping case numbers low all through the pandemic. But that means other than vaccination there is little immunity in the population. Hence when winter came delta cases peaked. Now we have omicron to deal with. So can understand norway being very cautious.
England has had a lot of cases, has good vaccine coverage especially for the vulnerable. We've basically let the virus run through the population since july. There is nobody who hasn't been exposed (or if there is, i doubt they're going to be now). Still need to be cautious but not as much as norway.

In the U.K. the key mantra for observing measures against the spread of covid has been to “help protect the National Health Service”.
But it’s not always straightforward. The NHS itself has been the main hub for covid infections nationally. And whilst we have not had the negative press of corridors filled with masses of covid dead and dying, many non-covid services have undeniably failed.
Saying that I don’t rightly know what else they could have done.

That's just down on hospitalised patients. When you factor in hospitalisations are also down (one report said by 91%). That's a lot less deaths.
Think you misread that.
The deaths are percentage of the people in hospital with the virus. If more mild cases are admitted the percentage would go down.

If people are panicking and turning up at hospital with covid colds, the hospitalisation to death ratio will get bigger.
