Danny Rose

Tottenham match-winner Danny Rose believes his and right-back Kyle Walker's important attacking contributions in the 2-1 defeat of Burnley prove Mauricio Pochettino's tactical nous.

Spurs were by no means convincing as they scraped a slender victory against their stubborn opponents, wasting a host of chances and looking in danger of dropping points for much of the match after Ashley Barnes' 21st-minute opener.

Dele Alli swiftly levelled things thanks to a fine cross from Walker and their other full-back, Rose, ultimately wrapped up the win 19 minutes from time, highlighting the importance of the two defenders' attacking attributes.

"The gaffer [Pochettino] does not like us both being high up the pitch at the same time but we changed that tactic today," Rose told BBC Sport.

"Kyle got his assist and I got the goal. The manager got his tactics spot on.

"We started the game not to so well and Burnley deserved to go ahead. The manager told us to stay patient at half-time and thankfully I finished off a good counter-attack."

Pochettino was proud his side managed to come out on top against such dogged opposition, with a win putting them one point behind fourth-placed Arsenal.

He said: "In the Premier League it is very hard to win games. Today we knew Burnley are a team that fights a lot, run a lot and every ball they are ready to challenge.

"The team played in a very good way and we fully deserved the victory. I am pleased for that. It was a very difficult game."
 
Pure magic was at it all game.I anyone ever deserved to score a winner it was him.One small thing though him and Walker are expected to work so hard can they possibly keep it going all season.
 
I think with today's game he may have just edged ahead of Vertonghen and Walker in the player of the season so far stakes. Close call between him and Lloris at the moment.

His transformation under Poch has been truly remarkable. Just look back through this thread to the end of the 2013/14 season and the reaction that summer when Poch gave him a new contract. Best left-back in the country at the moment.

Mea culpa. I thought he wasn't good enough for us, and I said it loud and clear. I remain consistently f*cking glad he decisively proved me wrong, I'm sorry I doubted him as much as I did, and I'm happy for the guy as well.

That's the beauty of it, though - if you're right about a player being crap, it f*cking hurts, because it hurts your club. If you're wrong, it's the best thing in the world, because it helps you win. That's the sort of thing that keeps what little magic there still is in football alive, in spite of all the unbelievably awful things that we've now discovered are lurking behind the stage curtains. ;) One of the most positive, cheerful posters on this forum, @thfcsteff (if I remember correctly) once snootily replied to the suggestion of a particular player being used in the first team with the answer (as I remember it) -

"...if *said player* is the answer, it's a bloody shame there's even a question."

At some point in 2013, I think.

'Said player' was a young, gangly lad then out on loan at Norwich - one Harry Edward Kane, Esquire. Back then, I'd have agreed with him, without a doubt. Now, I'm sure he's never been happier to have been proved wrong, at least when it comes to Spurs. :p Much as I am with regard to both him and Rose.

Not absolving myself from any of this, of course - I make emotional judgements and lose my temper with players as much as the next man, although I recognize that it's frequently counter-productive and flat-out wrong at times. And I still can't quieten the instinct that tells me that certain players bought on the cheap are going to be crap, much as I'd like to - and there I've possibly been proven more right than wrong on the times when I have felt that a player wouldn't suit us.

But I have been soldiering on with resolution to give those players as much time as I can, at least to the extent that my emotional outbursts post-defeat permit, and regardless of any growing misgivings I might have. It's what kept me (at least in part) rooting for Soldado to make a come-back and storm the league for us right up until he left for Villarreal.

Janssen and Sissoko are the current lads who fall into this category at present, the Rose/Kane of this age in the sense that people are already questioning if they'll make it here. Let's not make the same mistake again - or, at least, let's not do so without trying to reign in our snap judgements for at least one season so they can bed in.

His defending has improved but it was never that bad ... we were bad as a team generally defensively

Now he is thriving from being fitter, more experienced and confident and playing with better players

He was great on loan at Sunderland and was solid here until he got slated for being sent off vs Villa.

Playing as he has now for the last 2 years puts him up there with the best in the world. I'd he was playing for city for example we would be hearing it all the time but it doesn't happen for us

I'd really like us to sign sessegnon from Fulham as a more like for like player who will learn off rose too over time
 
Must admit i always thought he was decent but if we progressed he would be left behind. Never thought he would be as important as he is to us now, same with Walker.

Walker is one of the top 2 in the league along with Bellerin who for me is still weak defensively - there is arguments for both

Rose is now for me one of the top lefts backs in world football and undisputedly the best in this league even with people stupid blinkers on (spammer claiming creswell, gooners rating Monreal etc...)
 
I couldn't help but comment today on Football365's winners and losers column after they made no mention of him whatsoever - and a very perfunctory mention of Tottenham at all.
