I liked Erik Lamela before it was cool

He's still carrying his hefty price tag around on his shoulders. The sooner he can get back to playing football, developing, the better. At the moment he is trying to be that £30m player. Just play your game, show patience and the performances will come.

I must admit, I've only seen highlights of his Roma days. Where did the majority of his goals come from? Where they inside the box? Outside the box? Did he make late surging runs into the box etc?

You can of course call it an excuse. But the fact is that a rather large number of players do need time and games to fit into a new league and/or a new team. I don't see it as an excuse, just a good reason to be patient with a young player with a lot of talent whose also putting in a lot of effort. I don't see Modric THFC making excuses in the post you quoted, and I haven't seen many other posters doing so either. Is there a way one can call for a player to be given time without it sounding like an excuse to you?

What do you mean by not acceptable? In what way do we or the club go about not accepting it?

No one is expecting world class performances straight away. A sustained level of consistency of course comes with time and experience. However, what you do look for is a spark of something to show you that the quality is inside the player. Players like Modric and Berbatov you could see they were class even though they might not do it week in week out straight away.

With Lamela I just dont see it. When I watch him 9 times out of 10 I can tell exactly what he is going to do before he does it.

I think everyone hoping (praying) he works out is simply because its all we have to cling on to. Do I want him to succeed here ? Of course yes. Do I think he will ? No. Im happy to be proved wrong.

He needs premier league games to get used to it.
This is not something hes gonna learn in training or the europa league.
We're not gonna get top 4 this season anyway so ****ing play him.

Would you assign the same rationale to all our young players? I mean, they could all use more PL time and games to adjust and develop, right? A case could be made for all of them in this regard. In fact this can and has been said about some older players too.

So then, if we take it a step further, we then have to decide whether Lamela is somehow a special or unique case, and whether he is maybe more deserving than others. (And yes, his price tag likely plays a role in that.) While its true Lamela hasn't started many PL games, part of that is because he hasn't been selected.

Lamella is like a Ferrari.... Pretty to look at but pretty useless on British roads

He is predictable and plays almost as if he is blind. Clearly he has tricks but without a turn of pace he can't use them to the full effect. I watched him in Italy and I've always thought it (now it's confirmed) Italian defences are the slowest around as Lamella looked lightning over there

The comment about Totti is fair although from the games I watched in his second season he was creating is own chances coming in from the right... But was very greedy

I personally am disappointed as I thought he was the perfect signing... But when I see him in the team I know we won't be at the level needed against top sides as he simply does nor influence the game and actually hinders players like Eriksen

He may come good and economically it makes some sense to persist with him but what is he actually good at that merits his place in the side now other than his price tag???

He does work hard and does play with his head up.... But then gives the ball away more than most players I've ever seen or runs it out for a goal kick. If he can learn to play a pass quickly the we might, might have a player

Thought Lamela had a decent game against Chelsea. There was 1 inch perfect pass from Lamela in the 2nd half which opened up Chelsea defence but Kane got caught offside.

You're being difficult on purpose, or you really don't understand the argument put forward by Modric THFC and others?

It's not just a price thing, it's a talent thing. Obviously the price is an indicator of how much talent the club thought he had when we signed him, but he's also clearly showing talent on the pitch.

He wasn't selected under AVB. Sherwood started off using him, then he got injured and was injured for the rest of Sherwood's stay as head coach. Poch has used him regularly.

Bedfordspurs, hey when you watched him what position and role did he play for Roma? I saw him a few times for them but wasn't watching close enough and so I can't recall the specifics now. Thanks.

Independent rating: http://www.independent.co.uk/sport/football/premier-league/harry-kane-would-never-have-been-allowed-to-leave-tottenham-insists-mauricio-pochettino-9906883.html

Utterly anonymous as an attacking player and a liability in defence, failing to offer Ben Davies any protection from the rampaging Ivanovic. May have been a mistake to start the Argentine. 3

What were the other ratings Maltese, to judge if that's ultra harsh or not, e.g. If he marked bentaleb low as well then he's just a dingdong for example. The link doesn't take you to them.

Not making excuses for him but there were plenty who said Lamela had a good game and I certainly wouldn't go by a journalists opinion. They readily criticise players like Lamela who command big fees if they aren't performing to the expected level, even when they do ok without doing anything amazing it's better and easy for them just to suggest they were useless....

Thing is - Kane stood out! he didn't - he was indeed utterly anonymous. Watched the whole game and whereas I can mention at least one standout moment for most of the team, Lamela was indeed utterly anonymous.

Yes Kane did stand out. Not saying Lamela was great but other than Kane was the only one who looked like creating something really. There is no way he was a 3/10, a 6 would have been about right....

He played for them as a wide forward rather than a winger, certainly more so in his second season. Kind of similar to Hazard plays now

I honestly thought he was the perfect bale replacement I have to say.... But the more I see of him the less confident I am

He just doesn't seem to have any impact on the games for me despute moments of quality.... And he just does not play quick enough
