I liked Erik Lamela before it was cool

Re: Erik Lamela - Official

By picked apart, I mean over-analyzed - both in a positive and negative way. There's simply no reason to obsess over his every touch/pass/what have you, he will never be the type to drop in with a bang - just look at his pre-season, he was miserable there and looked like a completely different player because his life wasn't settled.

I know why we're tempted to do it, and there's certainly nothing wrong with your opinion, I'd just suggest that EVERYONE wait a while before really forming any conclusions about our newbies *coughChadlicough*. Eriksen isn't the second coming just yet, you guys.

Spot on. people complain about the media building us up just to knock us down at times but our support is just as bad at times with the short term outlook, both positive and negative.

Re: Erik Lamela - Official

No question in my mind, Lamela should start from now on. So much more control, technique, and intelligence than Townsend.

He can pass the ball and spot a pass. Townsend is just run fast and shoot (even though he's too far out and even blind people can see the shot coming because he's so predictable).

Re: Erik Lamela - Official

I dont think Townsend has done anything wrong ecept his incessant addiction to shooting

Re: Erik Lamela - Official

As a winger he doesn't provide opportunities for others to score.. This is unforgivable.

His decision making and discipline are poor. Today for example: the team is set up around Cardiff's box, passing it around and searching for a good opportunity, then Townsend gets it....immediately looks to take on his defender, cuts left and rolls one straight to the keeper. About 10 minutes later, he receives the ball wide open inside the box, DOESN'T SHOOT, then dribbles into a defender and is dispossessed.

I just think he is better suited in a sub role for games when a boost of energy is needed either on the left or right side.

Quoted from the Paulinho thread as I thought these .gifs belong here too.

Might as well put his goal gifs in here as well.

Great assist for me. Just love he way he keeps looking up to find the player in the box when he's receiving the ball. He's been (perhaps incorrectly) compared to Bale a lot, but that ability is one that Bale had too and that often benefited us when Bale was playing on the left.

He plays the pass through the legs of Caulker, right? If he intentionally does that, after looking up to find Paulinho (his only target) in the box that's sensational. Not saying he definitely did that on purpose, but there's a real chance i think.

Showed a bit of physicality winning the first header too.

Re: Erik Lamela - Official

I think Townsend is much more suited to coming off the bench late in games or when we are in need of a goal or something special. It's quite amazing we are doing the opposite right now  Townsend did deserve his place in the side, give Lamela the start against Villa and we'll go from there.

Re: Erik Lamela - Official

Agreed, it goes through Caulker's legs and what I also like about it is that he didn't play the ball into the space in front of Paulinho, which is where a lot of wingers are tempted to cross to so the player has an easy tap-in as they arrive into the box. However in this case that would've run into the danger of getting too close to Marshall, or allowing the defender in the back to get a foot in if it were even the tiniest fraction faster.

Anyways, early days but good signs, especially in his link-up with Holtby. (Holtby does seem to love our RWFs, doesn't he? Was constantly trying to pick out Bale too but I just assumed it was the fanboying.)

Re: Erik Lamela - Official

That was a perfect ball in, and played at exactly the right time. You do suspect Townsend probably would have delayed it another stride and perhaps lost the opportunity.

I think there might be an element of trying a wee bit too hard to impress about him at the moment; I hadn't noticed that his decision-making in that respect was especially poor in the past. Perhaps he feels this is his opportunity to claim a regular first-team spot and make it very hard for Lennon to get a look in when he returns.

Re: Erik Lamela - Official

Is there any chance that we can stop comparing Townsend directly to Lamela?

It's a bit silly at this point. One is a £30m full Argentinian international that's been considered a starlet for years. The other is also young, but at a completely different level of his development.

When they are competing for the same spot I'd say the comparisons are warranted.

They are also almost entirely different players. They're both comfortable out on the wing: there, the similarities end. Townsend is a surprisingly good dribbler, jinking and twisting past players almost at will. However, he's also very 'head down', in that he doesn't see much end to his dribbling beyond bamboozling the defence and blasting the ball towards the net. Occasionally, he'll slip a great inside pass to Walker, but that's about it.

Don't get me wrong, there's a lot to like in that approach: direct, forceful, pacy. Exactly what we need when we're struggling to pass our way through a tough side.

However, Lamela, as he proved today, is a different player entirely: almost always receiving the ball with his head up, looking for options, and possessed of the ability to pass perfectly into the feet of one of our forwards without needing a lot of time or space. He's a visionary playmaker we've stationed out on the wing, and he's got both pace to burn and a surprisingly sturdy physical frame he uses well when competing for headers and stray balls. I was hesitant about his ability to settle in quickly, and still am to a degree, but I'm very, very excited by what this lad could become in the next few years before being sold to our parent club Real.

Both are good options, with one perhaps slightly more useful to us presently than the other. But they've both got worth in their own individual fields, and are very different players indeed.

They're really not imo.

Lamela is about to turn from star to superstar by the looks of things. Townsend is at this point hoping to get as much game time as possible hoping to prove himself as good enough to be a squad player for a top team in the league. In itself impressive, but he's at a completely different level to Lamela.

Lamela will be a first choice player for us as soon as he's settled into the squad and team. That's about as inevitable as it was that Lloris would be our first choice goalkeeper last season. My guess is that Lamela will be first choice in a matter of weeks at most. They can both play at the same time as they can both play multiple positions, they're very different player types.

I would liek to see him against Chelscum next weekend. I think he will play against Villa tho so not sure how much of a bearing that has on his chances of starting then.

Re: Erik Lamela - Official

The thing that would stop Townsend shooting so much is if he played out on the left and would go outside his man more than cutting in. He's actually good at crossing a ball too....

Until Lamela is starting, the comparisons are inevitable.

I completely agree that they can play together at the same time. In fact, I would have loved AVB to start Lamela on the right and Townsend on the left today. With Rose out, Townsend's pace would have been useful.
