I liked Erik Lamela before it was cool

Re: Official - Lamela

100% agree on that, and it depends on each individual player if he can cope. We dont know how much this will affect Lamela for example. The pressure comes from the fans and media but the actual price tag shouldnt reflect the player's ability.

i dont agree about Carroll....its not just his ability, its his fitness record too thats just as questionable. West Ham paid twice the 6 mill you suggest and look where its got them.

10th last season was a good finish for West Ham. Even above expectations I'd say.

A price tag shouldn't reflect a player's ability? Actually it SHOULD reflect it, and the problem is it often doesn't. Which is why clubs get themselves into financial trouble by blowing significant parts of their transfer budget on a couple of players they have massively overpaid for.

It's why for Spurs the worst signings in our history aren't the low cost, low risk signings such as Acimovic but are players we paid through those nose for like Rebrov & Bentley.

Re: Official - Lamela

and fair play to AVB. He spent all that money on Lamela, but he also sees how well Townsend has been performing and has given youth product Townsend his full support by making him first choice in PL games

its a fair fight between the free youth product and the 25 mill pound signing as to who gets the starting berth. Surely that demonstrates what AVB himself thinks about price tags

but you cant accuse Spurs of this in recent years.....just look at the quality we have signed in recent years and how much we paid

9 mill Lloris, 7 mill Vertonghen, 6 mill Sandro, 1.5 mill Holtby, 10 mill Eriksen, 6 mill Sigurdsson....there are more examples but im sure you get my meaning

we paid 11 mill for Rebrov, and we paid 11 mill for Berbatov............what has the price tag got to do with how each performed for Spurs or each players individual qualities?

same goes for 16 mill Bentley and 16 mill Modric???

Re: Official - Lamela

actually Modric in particular, but Berbatov too, are good examples of giving new players from abroad, signed for big sums, time to settle in.....luckily for them they were older than Lamela is right now, but they needed a period of adjustment before the fans and media took them to heart and appreciated their wonderful qualities

Re: Official - Lamela

Patience is the name of the game with all our newbies.

Brilliant that we are third despite their settling in process.

Re: Official - Lamela

It's way too early to be making any sort an assessment on Lamela yet.

It is natural to assess players based on their price tag. It's hard not to put a value for money assessment on players but at this early stage its premature to say the least. I have a good feeling about this guy - his touch and movement are superb.

Re: Official - Lamela

Berbatov scored 2 goals in his first 11 PL games!!

You are obsessing over the qualities of the player. It's about value for money. For £16m you expect a very good player. If you pay £16m a player the expectations are therefore that the player IS very good.

Rebrov and Thatcher set us back a good four seasons. £16m down the drain at a time when we weren't exactly cash rich. It took us years to turn that around.

No one is saying Lamela doesn't need time. I think we are debating cross purposes here.

well Levy learned his lesson and now we only spend what we can afford. Our net transfer spending is almost break even for each of the last few years

we spent big on Lamela and Soldado because we got 85 mill for Bale. I trust Levy when it comes to balancing the books

Re: Official - Lamela

Players need time to settle, good news is we aren't dependent on Lamela settling in instantly, even with Lennon out injured.

Berbatov took a while to get the goals flowing, but from the first game looked a complete class act. He has that make the game look easy thing.
Modric/Carrick took a while for their qualities to show.
Most recently, Holtby looks far more effective this season vs. last.

ok, so what would you rather we did.....spend 8 mill on Tom Ince or 25 mill on Lamela??

from a prudent business point of view, in terms of value for money, Tom Ince made a lot of sense.

History will be the judge of that. If Lamela turns out to be a flop then I'd rather have signed Tom Ince! In all seriousness it seems to me Lamela's biggest problem is actually Eriksen if he really did play the number 10 role last season.

Very true, but the problem is players also need games consistently.

I don't think Holtby looks any different to last season, and in my opinion Carrick looked a class above in his first full start for Spurs. Modric took half a dozen games to start really showing what he could do.

Modric didnt start performing until Redknapp had his feet under the table at Spurs

Holtby is playing in a different position to last season, and you are the only one that has said he doesnt look any different now to then in terms of performance level

I feel the same way with Lamela. He just looks a class act/a class above. IIRC both Berbatov and to some extent Carrick had games where they didn't do as much of note in that early period, as most players have throughout their careers. But they showed their class in between those more quiet periods, sometimes in individual situations. That's what I'm seeing from Lamela.

Like against Cardiff when he helped win us 2 points with that great assist. That was class. And with that he's made more of a direct contribution towards our points column in the PL with his one assist in half a game total playing time than Townsend has done with his no goals and no assists in 5 league start.

Not trying to bash Townsend who I think has been good, I just think it's strange that people rate Townsend so highly without also rating what Lamela has shown so far.

We didnt have to be prudent though we'd sold a played for £86m

Id 1m % rather have Lamela over Ince

It's because Townsend has played better maybe? Lamela has done OK. If he wasn't so highly rated before he signed for us, or cost so much money for that matter, then I doubt you'd have your current view of him even if he put in identical performances.

For me so far Paulinho & Eriksen have been the stand out purchases. The biggest "meh" for me is Chadli, but he is another who needs time and may come good.

Re: Official - Lamela

I want to se him compete with Eriksen playing in the middle rather than on the right.
