I liked Erik Lamela before it was cool

Not so sure about that. Bale will definately score more goals than Lamela. But don't think he can work hard defensively the way Lamela does for us. Also, with Bale around, we would probably become a one-man team like we used to be under AVB, affecting Kane's chances to score goals.

Bale is one of the best in the world, we are only 5 points off top. He would definitely have been enough to make up that deficit and most probably more.

Erik Lamela Delighted to Reach 100 Appearances for Tottenham
ByJamie Spencer
18 MAR 2016

Tottenham Hotspur winger Erik Lamela made his 100th appearance for the club during Thursday night's Europa League clash with Borussia Dortmund. Despite the outcome of the tie, the club's record signing was delighted to hit the milestone.

"I'm proud to play 100 games for Spurs," Lamela told TottenhamHotspur.com afterwards.

It hasn't always been easy for the Argentine international following his 2013 move from Roma. Brought into replace Real Madrid-bound Gareth Bale, Lamela initially struggled to settle and subsequently failed to impress on the pitch.

As a result he has been regularly linked with a return to Italy. However, the 24-year-old has come into his own since Mauricio Pochettino arrived at the club just over 18 months ago is beginning to repay the faith that was shown.

"This is home for me, I'm happy playing here, I love the club, the supporters and the team," Lamela went on to add.

The former River Plate star, who was compared to Lionel Messi at a young age, has been a regular starter in the Premier League and in Europe this season. He's scored nine times in all competitions, including a hat-trick against Monaco at White Hart Lane in December, and has managed six assists.

Pressed for his favourite moment in a Spurs shirt, the humble Lamela told the club's official website, "The rabona [against Asteras Tripoli in 2014] was a good goal but I prefer this season because the team is playing well and we’re not finished yet, we can still do better."

On his current form, he added, "I don’t know, I think the team is most important and the team has helped me a lot. We are fighting to win every game, we show that. This is the way to keep going."

Well done to Lamela for reaching 100 appearances for the team. There were still doubts about his Spurs future at the start of the season. But he has improved greatly this season, becoming one of our key players in the team. So far he has 9 goals and 6 assists this season. Just wish he can score more league goals. He probably would have had 10-15 assists this season if players like Kane, Chadli and Son had not wasted all the chances created by Lamela with his inch perfect passes this season.

Looking at Pochettino's reaction to Lamela's rabona goal last season, it is clear Pochettino doesn't like Lamela doing the fancy tricks. Pochettino should give Lamela more freedom to do what he wants so that he can be even better for us.

I would still get rid to be honest, pleased he has gotten better, but I think the are better suited players to our system out there then him he also gives the ball away far to much for my liking.

Erik Lamela, from expendable to essential, epitomises post-Bale Tottenham resurgence

When Gareth Bale was sold to Real Madrid for a world-record fee of £85 million (Dh451.8m) in the summer of 2013, it was anticipated Tottenham Hotspur would use the proceeds to build a team capable of qualifying for the Uefa Champions League on a regular basis.

Things did not quite go to plan. While it was later claimed that Tottenham made a mistake in signing seven newcomers instead of using the funds to bring in one or two elite-level players, the failure of the endeavour lied in its execution rather than its conception.

Splitting the funds to strengthen multiple areas of the team was a sensible idea, but by the time Mauricio Pochettino had taken the reins at White Hart Lane in May 2014, most of the previous year’s acquisitions were considered expensive flops.

When Tottenham kicked off this season’s campaign against Manchester United back in August, three members of the septet – Paulinho, Etienne Capoue and Vlad Chiriches – were no longer present and another, Roberto Soldado, was on his way to Villarreal.

Christian Eriksen and Nacer Chadli had impressed Pochettino enough to remain, but the speculation linking Erik Lamela with a move away continued right up until the final hours of the summer transfer window.

In the end, the Argentine stayed put despite reported interest from Marseille, Inter Milan and former club Roma.

Although he had shown flashes of quality in his first couple of years in north London, it is safe to say that the majority of Tottenham supporters would not have been at all distraught had a deal gone through, with Marseille president Vincent Labrune claiming that the Premier League side pulled the plug on a transfer at the last minute after failing to secure the signature of a replacement in time.

Six and a half months on and it would be a tough task finding a Spurs fan who does not appreciate Lamela’s value to their team’s title tilt.

In many ways, the previously feeble and fragile winger has become the embodiment of Pochettino’s hard-running, high-energy and physically robust championship-chasing outfit.

Lamela may not be producing quite as many moments of magic as he did in his final 15-goal season at Roma – although Eriksen is the only Tottenham player to have created more chances in the Premier League – but he can no longer be accused of going missing in matches or allowing the speed of the English game to pass him by.

In fact, it is often he who sets the tempo for his side, hassling and harrying opponents when he does not have the ball and combining neatly with his attacking colleagues when he does.

“I think I need a bit of time," Lamela replied when asked in October 2013 why he had struggled to hit the ground running in his first few months at Tottenham.

“I need training, a bit of rhythm, some games. English football is very different from the game in Italy – much more physical, whereas Serie A is more tactical.

“It’s not necessarily more difficult, but it’s just different. This is a style of football I like very much, though, and I think, with the way I play, it will be very suited to my game."

It can be easy to forget that moving to a new competition in a different country is far from straightforward for footballers in their early 20s, who are often weighed down by a price tag they had no say in setting.

It has taken the Argentina international a couple of years to fully find his feet in the Premier League, but Tottenham’s patience is now paying off.

Young, energetic and with a strong appreciation of the collective, there is no-one who epitomises what Pochettino’s Tottenham stand for more than Lamela.

All the media and pundits seems to have good words about Lamela this season. Why, Lamela seems to have his own fan club among some Arsenal fans as well ! But strangely, some hard-to-please Spurs fans still find it hard to appreciate Lamela !

I fudgeing love him, our most important player, he's our tempo, we are not the same side when he isn't on the pitch.

Frankly, Pochettino should build the team around him, making him the playmaker and captain of the team ! He always seems to be fired up in all the matches. That can really motivate the other players. He will be a great player if he can score more league goals though.

Are you in his entourage? I love that you love him but you do seem to find every news story about him, but no one else!

In case this is a wind up I won't bite, too hard.......but ARE YOU SERIOUS?!

He's our best presser, runs full speed for as long as he's on the pitch, has an amazing eye for a pass and is statistically our best tackler. Add to that, his attitude is 100% spot on, passionate as fcuk, takes a decent corner and chips in with a decent amount of assists and the odd goal.

I fudging love seeing his name on the team sheet.

I would like to see him improve his effectiveness when he is running directly at people and also his shooting so he can chip in with more goals. Otherwise I agree, I love him and if fit, he would always be on my team sheet.

Stop! Hammer time and all that and he has faults, but he actually epitomises Poch system to me, so I would have say I think it would be difficult to find any better suited.
Better players, yes no doubt, better suited, tough one IMHO

Nope I think the are better players out there, not that he is bad, but until he adds to his game I do not think he is good enough. I have seen Dembele improve so I will trust Poch to do what is best.

He is consistently doing a job that helps the team and he is there on merit

My big concern with him is his over reliance on his left foot. There were a few time today where a simple right foot pass would have done the job but he tried some complicated outside of the left foot pass that didn't work

But I come back to my first sentence he is adding to the team and doing his job well

Sure there are better players out there but I think he has improved considerably. A major flaw in his game last season was to keep the ball too long and bring it into contact with the opposition rather than move it on quickly. He has certainly improved on this.

He also is making the obvious pass way more than he used to. As I coach my kids the obvious pass is almost always the right pass. That is why it is called the obvious pass. The no-looksy reverse dinked rabona through ball looks great on the highlight reel but if it only comes off once every hundred attempts then the reel will be rather short. I like that he keeps it simpler now but picks his time to try the defence splitter.

Has he bulked up a bit? I'm not sure on this, I'd need to do a side by side comparison, but he seems a little more robust than before. He seems a lot harder to knock off the ball now.

He's on an upward trajectory. Definitely a keeper (don't bother with a joke here:p)

I agree he is improving and I quite like the kid and how hard he has tried and kept his head. I just think the are better players out there, but I will be happy if continues to blossom.

Chadli and Fazio are the only two I would certainly get rid of.

Doesn't score enough goals in the EPL. We can sign better players given a UCL place. He needs to do more than press. Would this be acceptable if we were referring to Soldado, to Dembele, to Walker?

Can he press halfway up the pitch and be in goal scoring positions at the same time though?
It's the Lamella/Chadli conundrum. One presses, affects his scoring chances, other doesnt press, but is in the box to convert the chances.
