I liked Erik Lamela before it was cool

if he comes back soon and plays as well as he did last season we'll win the league

Comments like that sum up why I think he's the most overrated player on this forum. He's a far better player than he was 2 years ago and it will be nice to get him back but let's put things into perspective, he's about the 7th or 8th most important player in our team, even that's being generous.

Lamela's continued absence is worrying. He is reportedly recovering only slowly from a hip injury that he's been carrying for months although it did not prevent him returning to Argentina for mysterious reasons surrounding family issues.

The situation is starting to take on the same air of mystery that surrounded the likes of Stambouli and Bentaleb, both of whom faded inexplicably from the scene before eventually being moved on.

Perhaps @Spurs7891 can throw some light?

Big difference between carrying an injury that won't allow you to compete at elite athlete level, vs. being able to walk and manage social activities (i.e. go see your family when needed).

Hip injuries are difficult to put timelines on .. he'll be back when ready and we will all forget the conspiracy theories ..

Well I suppose if there is a difference this time it is that Poch has at least been giving us updates. I take heart from that, even if they have been somewhat vague.

Yep. He played in a run of about five or six games last season where he was great, but that was about it, apart from the heavy pressing he always put in. However, some on here are fixated on those few games and seem to have had the many, where he turned the ball over, slowed down our tempo, or smashed shots into defenders expunged from their memories.

.... and he had to travel to Roma with a Spurs physio

He went for his good, or for ours/our players' good ?

season 1 he was injured bit partying for a while ..... groundhog day ?

Think people are reading way too much into this ..

- Lamela has always been someone that seems to need friends/family around/supporting him.
- He's now the only real injury left, he's seen everyone else recover.

It's quite possible he's a little depressed being still injured, and the club thought a change of scenery with a few close people, supervised by our physio would be good for him. Far cry from the old days where players bitched the club did nothing to help them through rough periods ...

He's better than the players that have replaced him in the squad and our best attacking player at pressing. We will be stronger with him in the squad, which is why I think that people are keen to get him back.

Well, apparently Lamela was the one who asked if he could be allowed to go back to Roma, so it wasn't an initiative from the club as much as it was Poch and the staff acquiescing to a request made by Lamela himself.

I agree with @milo in that we will be stronger with him in the squad, and that there's no one who can press with the tempo and tenacity that he does in that attacking midfield band. His enforced absence might actually be a boon from that perspective - he's effectively had two months of enforced rest and recovery from his exertions in the summer, and he'll be the freshest of all the players when that crucial March-April period rolls around, which could help us keep our pressing game going as the players' legs start to feel heavier and more sluggish.

Provided this injury disappears, of course.

He's very quiet on social media these days. Personally I'd like to see him back fit and on the pitch. I miss his effective pressing alongside Dele and Erikssen.

Problem is, if he's the only one that is fresh, that is not enough. Our pressing relies on all players and not just one. But I'll take even one fresh player compared to none!

A bit more info on Lamela's situation from the press conference yesterday. The bolded part (mine) sounds like it may not be a quick return.

Now, Pochettino only has one injured player in Erik Lamela, who has returned to his former club AS Roma for treatment on a persistent hip problem. Lamela has a problem with a small muscle in his hip and his recovery was delayed at the beginning of last month when he returned to Argentina after his brother was severely injured in a swimming accident.

The Argentina international is being treated by Roma's club doctor, who helped treat him for a back injury in his first season at Tottenham too, and he has been accompanied by a member of Spurs' medical team.

"We have nothing to hide," said Pochettino, who expects Lamela back before the end of the season but refused to put a timeframe on his return.

"Only that it was first of all nothing, then a little bit, then that minor problem still every day. Then his brother's problem -- that affected his mind a little bit. It was a really slow recovery. He is very anxious, [saying] 'I need to go' and we thought, OK maybe it is good for you and your mind to change scenery."
