I liked Erik Lamela before it was cool

Where does the lamela can play instead of eriksen thing come from???

Also where do the comments that lamela is needed for bus Parker’s too?

From what I’ve seen he doesn’t have the passing range of eriksen at all and relies on little slide rule passes, and he is generally infective against bus Parker’s as his passing range doesn’t scare them out and he can only use one foot

They’ve both spent the majority of their career in AM, we’ve used them both in all three of the slots at times.

Lamela has shown he can thread a ball through a packed defence in tight situations, he’s also shown the ability to dribble into dangerous positions, not to say Eriksen can’t do these things of course.

I agree that Eriksen has offered a greater threat from deeper passing positions but should he be injured or suspended would you really not consider Lamela for one of the three AM slots?

Lamela has always played a wide role

He excelled there at Roma when we brought him

I’m not anti Lamela but I can’t remember many examples of his dribbling being effective

I also can’t think of him ever whipping the ball in like erisken or playing a great pass longer than 10;yards which is vital to the central role

Ryan Mason explains why Mauricio Pochettino picks Erik Lamela for Spurs' big games

The former Spurs midfielder heaped praise on the Argentine winger

Former Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Ryan Mason says it is no surprise that Mauricio Pochettinopicks Erik Lamela for the big games, praising his ex-teammate's ability to "create a bit of brilliance".

The Argentinian winger returned to the first team in November after a long injury lay-off, and is beginning to establish himself in Pochettino's plans, starting Spurs' last two games against Crystal Palace and Rochdale.

Since arriving in North London from Roma, Lamela has made 141 appearances, scoring 20 goals and chipping in with 36 assists.

Eyebrows were raised when the winger was given the nod ahead of in-form Son Heung-min for the Champions League tie at Juventus, but the 25-year-old was impressive in the 2-2 draw in Turin.

Speaking on BBC 5 Live sport, former teammate Mason said there are two main reasons that he was selected for such a crucial game.

“Coco’s (Lamela) one of these players, he loves football, I’ve never come across anyone in the game that loves the game as much as him," he said.

“The reason why the gaffer picks him is because one, he trusts him and two, Coco will never ever give anything less than 100 per cent.

“He’s got this ability to create a bit of brilliance.

"Coco's had such a long spell out and he's come back and looks fit and strong.

"Full credit to him, it's only because he loves the game and I know he will have been doing absolutely everything in his power to come back and be strong for the gaffer."

When Pochettino was asked about his decision to start Lamela over Son, Pochettino responded: "Erik Lamela knows what it means to play here against Juventus and we believe this experience will help the team."

Some players go missing against the big teams but not Lamela. Over the years, Lamela has at least a goal or an assist against all the big teams like Arsenal(2 assists), ManU(1 goal, 1 assist), ManCity(1 goal, 2 assists), Liverpool(2 assists) and Chelsea(1 assist). We badly missed him when he was injured last season. I am convinced we would have won the league ahead of Chelsea if Lamela was not injured last season.

The harsh reality is that we have had about five minutes of sunshine from Lamela since he signed. Some of this has been beyond his control, (injuries) but that is the fact of the matter.

Lamela is one of the hardest working players i have seen in a Spurs shirt ( only Perryman was better at that), he is a very talented player but for some reason he is like marmite for some fans. Thankfully Poch can see what he offers the team and i am glad for that.

He is very hard working
But could you see him doing Eriksens job?

I don’t think I’ve read anyone say he isn’t a good player just that some think we now have better options that are more effective

We’re any of them assists last season and away from home?

Just wondering as that’s where we needed the difference

No, not at all. I have said on here many times that i think Eriksen is the one player we would/do have trouble replacing when he is not playing. We have some very good players but ( imo) Eriksen is our most important as we have no one who does what he does.

I think Lamela keeps opponents honest. They know he's both mentally and physically quick, persistent, skillful but like so many Argentinians, unafraid of creating a little contact.

When you know you'll be punished for sloppy ball handling around him, it forces a rival player to make his next play just that little bit quicker and maybe not as sweetly as he'd like. Taking away time and space is a fundamental aspect of Pochettino's tactics. I like the way Lamela presents himself in a game - eager, just a little tinkled off (and it could quickly worsen) and hungry as fcuk to make up for lost time. A dog on a pork chop.

I’m convinced we would have won the league if Sissoko had gotten more starts.

On a serious note, I’m not sure where he would have fitted in to the side last season given Son and Alli’s Great goalscoring form. Would have been great to have him around but to say we would have won the league is a massive over exaggeration.

He was injured for most of last season but still had 1 assist at home against Liverpool. Overall, Lamela's goals and assists came against Liverpool(1 assist at home, 1 assist away), Chelsea(1 assist away), Arsenal (1 assist at home, 1 assist away), ManU (1 goal at home, 1 assist at home) and ManCity (1 goal at home, 1 assist at home, 1 assist away). Remember, our only away win against the top 6 teams in the last 3 years was against ManCity when Lamela came on and assisted our winning goal in 2016. Besides that, Lamela's set pieces like freekicks and corners are much better than Eriksen.

Lamelas free kicks???? Can’t say I remember him taking any

My mums corners are better than eriksens

But what your summary’s shows is that lamela is useful and plays best against teams that attack us.... that actually tally’s up with what I’ve been saying

He isn’t (IMO) effective against bus Parker’s

No he probably couldn't do what eriksen does, but then eriksen can't do what lamela does either.
I find it strange that we have all these players that are deemed not that great, decent back up but we should strengthen in the window, a bit meh, but here we are, top 4, last 8 of F A cup, going deep in CL.
We only one maybe two players everyone agrees on are class.
Yet we're one of teams no one wants to play but everyone wants to watch.
Maybe it's the balance and dynamc having players with different attributes and skill sets that has got us where we are, and will take us to where we're going.

I love this team, indivually and as a collective.

Agree with all of that an I’m really not anti Lamela. I just don’t see him in the first 11 when playing most of opponents. Spurs7891 highlighted earlier that Lamela has. A great record against attacking sides and for me against defensive sides he doesn’t pick the lock despite the talk about his passing... and he doesn’t see enough otherwise

It's horses for courses imv, poch picks the best players to play whatever way he thinks is best for that game and that system.
Doesn't matter to me if it's sonny, lamela or who ever, they are all capable of doing a job.
How fudging good is that.
It wasn' that long ago I waited for our line ups with trepidation, now I barely look. I sit back and enjoy the show with confidence of a good result.
Marvellous.

To say I'm not a big Lamela fan is a massive understatement but even I would disagree with this. I think he was excellent in the 2015/16 season when we finished 3rd, he was in the team most weeks on merit and was more effective than Son. He then got injured a few months later which was unfortunate. But Son grabbed the opportunity with both hands and hasn't looked back since. He's behind Son in the pecking order now for me.

If he's going to take anyone's place than I'd make a case for him starting in Alli's position if Alli's form dipped. He scored 15 goals for Roma so it's not unthinkable that he could and should score more goals for us.

He has the ability and technique to score, just seems to lack confidence in front of goal.
Where as son is very confident of his ability, rightly so.

Lamela never seems to be in a rush when he has the ball, son always seems to be in too much of a rush and eriksen is goldilocks.

According to Italian football oracle TuttoSport, Lamela won't be involved tonight as he's in talks with Inter over a move.

The source is Tuttosport.

Tuttosport is an Italian sport newspaper published in Turin, Italy.

Juventus is an Italian football club from Turin, Italy.

It's flimflam with an obvious agenda.

As if Lamela wants to go anywhere. Only someone with no real knowledge of his relationship with Pochettino could believe that. And only an Italian would think he would be interested in leaving Spurs for one of the also-rans in Italy.
