I liked Erik Lamela before it was cool

Re: Official - Lamela

The DM just posted an article saying this lad, Chadli, Eriksen and Vlad were not AVBs signings and he never wanted them. I guess I was wrong with my previous post about AVBs system.

Re: Official - Lamela

Jason Burt has always said that he wanted Soldado, Paulinho and Capoue, and was fine with Lamela but always thought he'd take 6-months to be ready for the first team.

Chadli, Chiriches and Eriksen seem to have been the committee 'good value' signings.

Re: Official - Lamela

And out of all those players, I'm happiest that we signed one of the committee players - Chiriches.

I'm not convinced Chadli would be good value to open a packet of crisps.... He is up their with the worse signings we have ever made!!!!!

Chiriches has looked tidy every game bar the last 15 tonight and Erkisen is a classy player who is a way from showing us that here

CHadli must have done something to merit sides wanting him but we only fought off Swansea for his signature IIRC. He really has to step up a lot for me

Re: Official - Lamela

My dutch mate told me we were mad to be buying Chadli but that Eriksen is the new messiah lol (Ajax fan). He also rates Holtby very highly and was gutted they didn't get him on the years loan

Re: Official - Lamela

Give him time, don't rush him. I didn't want Lamela to play this game (thought West Ham would try to bully him and shrink his confidence further), and I certainly don't want to throw him in off the deep end now. Maybe a week ago, but with the depressing atmosphere around the club, my hope is he won't be anywhere near all the goings-on until we have a new permanent manager in place or Sherwood is given the season.

Re: Official - Lamela

Posted this in the ratings thread, became a much longer post than I anticipated... thought it might be more at home here:

I thought it was quite clear today against Southampton that Lamela is still a long way from adapting fully to this league. His increased willingness to put himself about and get stuck in, while in themselves not particularly impressive, at least show he is coming to terms with the physicality of this league.

Holtby went through a similar phase (although it's a far smaller leap from German football). When he arrived, he looked like all he could do was run about. But increasingly he has been able to impose himself upon games with telling passes and a couple of goals, and I believe Lamela will undergo a similar transformation this season.

He is still far from acclimatised to the time he is afforded to make decisions. Numerous times today Lamela found brilliant space, looked to execute an excellent idea (at least 1 shot and several passes) but was just too slow. His decision making looks solid, but the speed of execution still isn't there. As someone else suggested, next season will be the time to judge him in earnest.

While I think we looked better after he came off, and that Chadli had a better game than him, he needs to keep starting games if he is going to get up to speed any time soon. I think we have a quality player on our hands if we have a bit of patience.

Re: Official - Lamela

Look at Walker. Slated by many on and off for a couple of years. Only now is he consistent. Lamella moved from Itally - not his home - and is now in a country where he doesn't speak the lingo. He has to mentally start again. Do the basics well, take baby steps, and it will come. He needs to feel his way in.

Re: Official - Lamela

Lamela needs to play in a position which suits him - RW in a 4-4-2 is the wrong place for him. Play him in a no 10 role or one of the wide forward positions in a 4-3-3

Henry used most of a year to adapt, would be madness to write him off now.

Tbh I thought that with a bit more practice, the system we used today could be very effective and could suit our squad, especially Lamela.

It was more of a 4-2-2-2, akin to that often employed by Pelligrini at Villarreal, Malaga and Emirates Marketing Project.

---------Soldado---------------Adebayor------------
----Sigurdsson-----------------------Lamela---------
-----------Dembele------------Eriksen---------------
Rose-----Chiriches----------Dawson----------Walker
---------------------Lloris--------------------------

He can come inside into the gap vacated by lateral movement from the strikers, and attack the goal or look for a pass from areas where his technical ability will be more valuable and his lack of pace less exposed - Walker capable of providing that with raids on the outside, and as we saw today, Ade too is very quick when he stretches his legs.

Let's be honest - what we saw today was not a classical 4-4-2 (it rarely gets used at the top level despite notionally being assigned to teams such as City and United) and Lamela was certainly not playing as a 'winger' in any sense other than that his starting position was on the flank.

A role like this, similar to that played by Nasri, Silva, etc. at City could get the best out of him. But irrespective of formation, he is going to need a lot more time.

Henry scored 17 league goals in his first season at Arsenal. Although that was helped because they played him in Lamela's best position, as a STRIKER.

Lamela gave the ball away a lot today with poor dribbling. He can be quite good with the ball at his feet, but he really needs to anticipate where to run, when a tackle is coming in, when to release the ball. If you think Townsend is bad at this, Lamela is much much worse. Again, it'll only improve through game time, but I think we should play him as a striker to avoid these sorts of situations where he feels the need to run with the ball and take on numerous players. Let's get him in front of goal.

Re: Official - Lamela

If it was legal to shoot footballers dead Lamela would not be alive after the first 20 minutes. But he improved and made some classy passes. Out of position most of the time but he at least tried to do the tackling thing as the game wore on..maybe he can do something other than pose..

Re: Official - Lamela

Hasn't been good at all tbh since moving but am impressed that he is getting more stuck in.

He's getting tackled a lot and misplacing a lot of passes, I think that is down to confidence and getting used to the pace of this league.

I saw him at Roma and know there's an exceptional player in there, he's one of the biggest young talents in the game imo. We just need to find a way of making him comfortable and coaxing it out.

that's always the risk init - coach vs. committee.
