He has been. I said before that he is better than Alderweireld & I think it’s true. He’s played in a mix and match defence all season yet has continued to play at a consistently high level. Excellent player.
In contention for team of the year? IMO he is the best centre-back in the league.

I actually think opponents make a mistake when they have their target men going for Vertonghen's side. Lukaku often drifted right when they booted it long, seemingly looking to get duels with Vertonghen over Sanchez.
Not sure if opponents identify Vertonghen as weaker physically than Sanchez, Dier and Alderweireld. Even if that's the case Vertonghen just keeps making good decisions on when to challenge, when to just try to contain and when to drop off. Unlike Smalling and Jones who kept making the wrong decisions against Kane in those situations.

His positioning has improved a lot this season. He used to get caught the wrong side a lot and then pull players back but I cannot remember the last time that he did this.
