No, no, no, Jan's a diving cheating scum bag, didn't you know?

Notice how the Mirror article attempts to make Vertonghen look almost worse than Torres' earlier violent conduct. Not a word about the way Torres jumped at him in the sending-off incident with no intention of going for the ball - he was looking away as he jumped.

Chances are Verthonghen wasn't hurt in the clash, but the earlier face-gauging incident had gone unpunished, so mitigating circumstances for an otherwise unacceptable over-reaction.

that's the quick wit and persuasiveness of mourinho at work... the biggest message he sent out at the post match press conference was not about how his team continues to struggle, but about verts diving and feigning injury, which is making its round on the world press, instead of the gouging issue.

we need justice and more awareness of this torres misdemeanor via the FA would be much welcome.

I'm surprised so little has been made of Mourinho's likely role in over-hyping Torres in the first place. Who else suspects that Saturday's uber-aggressive performance from the Spaniard was at least partially down to some pretty devious and calculated bullying from the Chelsea manager going into the match?

Aside from the thuggishness though, fair play to Mourinho, he got the committed performance he needed out of the £50m striker.

waiting for THFC the club to make a response/report for that clawing. i hope the clubs has the balls to take such matters to task.

Here's the punishments in rugby for eye gouging. Last one looks about right.

The regulations provide a scale of seriousness:
Lower end: up to 12-week ban.
Mid range: up to 18-week ban.
Top end: greater than 24-week ban.
The maximum sanction is a 156-week (3 year) ban.

Just seen that Graham Poll has made exactly the same points in today's Daily Wail. Great minds think alike \o/

Torres was a disgrace but I sense the hand of Jose in this cowardly assault

Fernando Torres should face at least a three-match ban for his spiteful, cowardly assault on Tottenham defender Jan Vertonghen and the FA has the power to enforce such a punishment.

The incident, six minutes into the second half, was played out in all its ugliness on video replays.

Torres was chasing another lost cause down the touchline and petulantly tripped Vertonghen. The foul was needless and probably caused by Torres’ frustration at being shackled so effectively by the Belgian.

Referee Mike Dean saw the trip, but his view was not clear of the follow-up by the Spaniard, who grabbed his opponent and appeared to try and press a thumb into his face and scratch his cheek with his fingers.

You could see the spite on Torres’ face and there appeared to be an intention to cause harm. There is no place on the football field for such actions, which rugby sees too often and always cites and punishes with video evidence.

Let’s be clear here — Torres should have been sent off. And as the violent incident was clearly missed by all of the match officials, the FA can now have the incident reviewed by their disciplinary panel, which must surely recommend a suspension.

I would expect Dean to confirm that he would have sent off Torres had he had the chance to see the incident — any select group referee would have done so.

Torres later got his comeuppance when he was red-carded following an aerial clash with Vertonghen.

That’s where Jose Mourinho enters the drama. The Chelsea manager is a past master a creating smokescreens to try to cover up wrongdoing from his stars and pointing the finger at Vertonghen’s actions following Torres’s jump at him is merely that.

Mourinho tried to make the Spurs player the villain of the piece, suggesting that he pretended to have been assaulted by Torres.

At full speed it did look as though Torres had jumped into Vertonghen and the defender’s reaction did not help Dean in determining what disciplinary action was correct.

Video replays confirmed that, in fact, Torres made little contact with the Spurs player, who was perhaps frustrated at still having to face the Spaniard despite being assaulted 30 minutes earlier.

The defender should be complimented for not reacting during the first incident. But it is a pity he did not do the same after the second as, by going to ground in dramatic fashion, he gave ammunition to Mourinho, who jumped on the opportunity to apportion blame.

Indeed, I wouldn’t be surprised if Torres’ actions at White Hart Lane could be linked back to Mourinho. We know from the past that the Portuguese can draw the best from players by ‘winding them up’ before a match.

He likes his players to play with fire in their bellies and that was certainly the case with Torres here as he tried to take the opportunity to show his manager that he is a better option than Samuel Eto’o.

Mourinho had painted himself as a ‘Mr Happy’ when he returned to the Premier League. On Saturday we saw evidence of the old dark arts as he created mischief in an attempt to protect his players.

This will be the first case to be adjudicated by the FA’s new disciplinary panel and it will be fascinating to see what suspension Torres finally faces. I hope justice is done and a suspension of at least three games for violent conduct is served.

I also hope it’s a one-off from Torres, who looked like he was returning to form and should not need to resort to scratching and gouging.

Jan Vertonghen hints at frustration
November 4, 2013
By ESPN staff

Tottenham defender Jan Vertonghen has hinted at his frustration at being played at left-back by manager Andre Villas-Boas.

Vertonghen, 26, played in a wide area instead of his usual centre-back position due to the absence of injured duo Danny Rose and Kyle Naughton.

In an interview published in The Sun, the Belgian suggested that he is not happy having to play in another role.

"It feels like that sometimes," he is quoted as saying on Belgian TV. "I can play at left-back and I can help the team at times. But everyone knows I am not a left-back.

"Once there are injuries, I’m the first to fill in the gap. Sometimes it’s better if you can play in only one position."

"You see that with other players. These guys specialise in one position and they can completely concentrate."

Vertonghen’s comments come on the back of recent criticism pointed at Villas-Boas for failing to protect injured goalkeeper Hugo Lloris.

Soccernet makes this sound as if Vertonghen is frustrated with AVB for playing him out of position. IIRC, Vertonghen has been telling this since last season that he wants to play in his best position which is in centre defence and don't like playing at left back. I am sure all the players want to play in their best position. I remember King was also frustrated at playing in centre midfield long time ago. But just like King, don't think Vertonghen had made any big issue out of this. The media are just trying to stir things up. But you have to wonder, if and when and Kaboul and Rose returns, who will be our 2 first choice centre defenders : Vertonghen, Dawson, Chiriches or Kaboul.

I much prefer The S*n's headline: 'Jan Vertonghen blasts AVB over tactics'

Re: Super Jan Vertonghen Official

Vertonghen was also picked in the Soccerner Team Of The Week :

Left back: Restored at left back after being deposed by Leighton Baines last week is Jan Vertonghen, Tottenham's Mr Reliable. The Belgian is one of a select crop of Premier League players who could probably do a competent job if asked to fill any role on a football field. Nicol called him "Tottenham's most dangerous attacker" against Everton, while Mariner focused on his defensive capabilities, pointing at his prowess in keeping the home side's wide men quiet.

As they say Vertonghen is definately our Mr.Reliable. Thought he was one of our best player in the first half against Everton. Just wish he would score more goals like last season. Apart from him being versatile for us, I think he is also roding his luck so far this season. On another day, he could have conceded the penalty against Everton. And still don't know how the ref avoided in punishing him for pulling down the Villa player's shorts in the League Cup match. Maybe the refs love him as well.
