Jan Vertonghen

He wasn't even that great, defensively, in his first season, IMO. He was good in possession and going forward. But he always struck me as a bit vulnerable when doing the job he's principally there to do. Doesn't like players running at him; isn't especially good in the air; prone both to losing concentration and to giving away silly penalties.

Don't get me wrong....he's still a good player. One of our best defenders. But he's no Ledley King. Not even close. All of this coupled with the sulky demeanour he wore for the entirety of last season means that, if he leaves and we make a tidy profit on him, I'll shed no tears.

Agree wholeheartedly with all of that.

Most players only sign 4 year contracts when they sign for a new team - he has 4 left on his, the way people have been banging on about it i assumed he was down to two. So really it's all a lot of noise about nothing

I don't believe a word of what he's saying! I don't think he's relation with Poch is very good, and he's sulking about not getting in the team now, and therefore refuses to sign a new contract.

I wonder if it really was supposed to be vert out and Mussachio in. Maybe poch just doesn't rate him.

Amen.

He still gives me more confidence than Kaboul and Chiriches put together. Can't think of anything those two excel at.

Still four years left on his contract so we'll get good money for him for at least the next four transfer windows, if we want to sell. Plenty of time to extend the contract later as well, if that's an option. So I'm not really that bothered about this.

I've seen enough of Chiriches to think he has something to offer when he's back to form. But for me Fazio ahead of Kaboul for the 'physical' defender role...

Best game I've seen him have for us in a long while -- aside getting caught out by Welbeck once in the first half, I don't think he put a foot wrong all game and he looked really up for it.

He did and thats why some of us have been pised off with him. He looked up for it yesterday hence playing well but generally he looks like he cant be arsed which affects his performances.

Yeah, he acted like he was doing us a favour by playing for us last season. I still think we should do everything we can to keep him as he's the best CB we have currently.

I wonder did the lack of interest for his services in the off season give him a bit of a wake up call. Last season was a bit of mess at the club but you have to make the most of whatever situation you find yourself in, and Jan didn't. If he wants out then the best way is to play to the best of his ability and maybe he realises that now.

it doesn't explicitly say what the players thought or said...i think it was largely to do with Jan wanting a move away, you can't build a team on someone like that.
