Jan Vertonghen

He did it with RVP and with Cesc. He gets at the opposition. Not sure if this is part of the instruction from Poch but it is good. We have been wimpy on the pitch for way too long. He is a good example of how we should treat our opposition. With aggression.

He seems a happy Jan again, his celebrations and actions on the pitch the last probably 8-10 games are showing this

I like that too. I didnt like it when he kicked the ball out yesterday didnt think it was an 'injury' as such. Chelscum of course didnt give it back to us the *****.

I wonder if there will be anymore contact talks anytime soon?

Yeah there will be a small announcement about an extension in the next month. It always happens when your on the up

The guy has top notch ability but also the ability to chose when he wants to play. Lately we have seen the Verts from his first season when he was the best centre back in the league

Clearly he is comfortable playing with Fazio and now seems happier playing under Poch. That can only be a hood thing as we need our players performing regularly to the best of their ability

+1 he can be cynical (in a good way for us) at times. He knows how to make the most of fouls for example.

He's by far our best defender, happy he's back in the head. Not to the extent of king, but I feel he improves whoever he partners. I think we need another quality centre back to add compeititon, not 100% sold on Fazio and Dier doesnt seem to be getting a look in, so another one is vital.

Everyone has been screaming for a consistent CB pair all season, and when we now have it, people complain about it! I just dont get it! Our record with Faz and Verts is nothing short of excellent! Why change something that's clearly (starting to) work?

what is it, 1 loss in 15 games? with that 1 loss coming at Stamford Bridge where we never win anyway.

was p1ssed off with him for their 3rd goal yesterday, he should have been sprinting back to his position, instead he stood there like a drama queen shooting dirty looks to the ref, had he been in position I don't think they score, I saw Eriksson having a go at him for exactly that at the time. Really was schoolboy stuff and it happens to him a few too many times, he kind of switches off.

Having said all that, I really do rate him and think he's a fantastic player when on his game, switching off is something that can be drilled out of him I'm sure, the team meeting today hopefully Poch is highlighting it and embarrassing him just enough that it doesn't happen again, because despite this post, I really do rate and like the guy.

I'm speaking more about the cup games and resting days where Chiriches has been selected ahead of him who we're desperate to sell. I don't think we should break up the partnership. But if one gets injured or needs a rest we need quality to come in.

I agree that another centre back coming in would be good. Much linked to Hector Moreno and he seems like a very sensible target. One injury, suspension or drop in form (knock on wood) now and it's Vlad, Dier or Kaboul. Neither of which fills me with confidence.

If Dier wants regular games at this point I think a loan is the obvious option.

Watch the replay again, half our side was switched off, the quick free kick caught the team out, not just Jan.

Honestly, I give him & Fazio a bye on the mistakes yesterday, especially later in the game, massive, massive effort against a great team, they must have been knackered mentally & physically at end

you cannot deny he looked like he couldnt give ****.

Like most of the players you mean, just because the guy is laid back does not mean he does not give a ****. To many so called experts at reading body language ( I wonder what Uni you have to go to get that degree ;) ), good for a laugh though.

I think Jan is one of those catch 22 players, he's very good (and knows it), if he sees everyone else putting in 100%, he will too. If it looks like no one else gives a **** (e.g. the midfield leaves the back 4 exposed week in, week out), he's not going to kill himself.

Character flaw as he could be the one to lead, but doesn't. However he will likely work very well under Poch, because Poch demands that everyone puts in a shift.

fair enough, then they all should get slaughtered for it by Poch. Honestly even at the level of football I played myself you don't do that or you get a proper *******ing for it. I understand thinking about the game in that way comes more naturally to some than others, but it's a massive bug bear of mine going back to my playing days, I could never understand how players just switch off like that, infuriating.
