Jose Mourinho - SACKED

400% this. Jose knows another failure he'll be in Qatar or US next, and he's too much of an ego to let that. He looked up to Fergie and knows he did it for so long, so many trophies, i'm not saying he'll get close to that level but he knows this is the last roll of the dice.

Jose loves shoving 2 fingers up. He absolutely adores proving people wrong, he gets personal, Wenger, Pep, i'm fully behind him. I hope fans fudging hate us by the end of the season. And he'll love that.

My big problems with appointing Jose was if Levy didn't bsck him to Jose satisfaction.
Then Jose could walk away and point to Levy.
Looks like that's been knocked on the head. If Jose fails now it's on him.
That's good for us, because Jose is going to give it his all.

I agree to an extent, technically it's two things

- Midfield is vastly improved
- I'd also say have both FBs working again is making an impact (even if it's just Davies and Aurier upping their game due to competition)

But .. there is a "feeling" that has changed as well .. a hangover gone, happiness re-found, whatever the fudge it is, long may it continue ..
Agree with this, and especially Aurier was never a bad defender, he was just extremely undisciplined. You can get away with that in France, who has two, maybe three good teams which will hide many deficiencies as "one of those days". Davies for me is unfortunately not good enough, he's disciplined but too slow mentally, and although improved is still on a Eriksen-level of hitting the first man in attack. I like him a lot, but he's not a (vital) part of a title-winning team in MY book. Reguilon is a vast improvement, at first sight at least.

Add to that, a paring of a postman and a tea lady is more creative than Winks and Sissoko, who are both dependant of a "director" alongside them to be of any use. Still, there's certainly a "feel-good" coming back, the celebrations feel more genuine and the selfishness and reluctance to create for others has become less apparent. And perhaps we have gotten the string-puller we've needed in Højbjerg, I'm optimistic about him on a level I haven't been since the signing of Eriksen (in a not-necessarily Dane-loving sense). And with Bale coming back for 5 or 6 games before injuring himself again, things are looking good indeed.

I think we will win something this season.

so, er...

if this was a rebuild, it wasn't that painful was it

It really was. 18 months of brick league performances, the loss of our greatest manager for at least 35 years, the break up of a likeable team. Pretty traumatic especially when you throw in the CL loss and then Covid and all that brick on top of it.

But I get your point. In 1-2 windows, we’ve gone from being a mess to very formidable. It does make me chuckle when I hear people say things like “we’ve been set back 5 years” when things are bad. We’ve fixed all our problems, bar CB, in less than a year and this squad looks stronger than any we’ve had in my time supporting the club.

No offence to Jose because I like him, am happy he’s here and rate him but I just wish Poch was still at the wheel.

If it makes you feel happier, we can pretend that Mourinho had already agreed to join the club last summer and was directing transfer business from afar.

nah, I'll take the compressed timeline thanks, he effectively did it in a fortnight

Hmm, don't think Poch was wrong in his assesment. Under Jose we've seen:

We've seen a new RB (established in PL)
A new LB (established in La Liga)
A new CM (established in PL)
A new winger (established in Dutch league which i can't spell)
A new Striker (established in Portugese league which i can't remember)
+ Gareth Bale.

I mean, these are substantial improvements to the first team. Under Poch, he wanted Mane and got N'Jie.

All of the signings we've made (and i'm not a Levy fan) are established players and can easily walk into the first XI. Under Poch, we rarely did that. How often would we shell out for 28 year old RBs with no resale value?

I think Levy has realised he has to back the man, and fair play he's done that. But this sort of activity was rarely seen under Poch, and people can say "well maybe it was Poch" but we all know Levy wasn't signing old players with no resale, his target market was under 25 like Wayne Lineker.

That's actually unfair, Wayne Lineker's target market is under 18.

After completing the stadium we got Ndombele, Lo Celso, Sessegnon and Clarke. We broke our transfer record twice that summer. Maybe Pochettino wanted something else, but that's very speculative to me.

Our transfers have changed with different managers. Look at Redknapp signings vs. Pochettino vs. Mourinho.

As a club we definitely have a focus on younger players. That's an overall focus and there will be exceptions, the wishes of the manager will play a part. I think Pochettino wanted, and needed, young hungry players.

Difference between Poch and Jose is Jose is not afraid to drop players who are brick. Poch was to scared to do that. That is the difference when it comes to winning.
I must have imagined Poch dropping Kaboul, Capoue, Walker, Bentaleb, Adebayor. Plus leavIng Janssen Nkoudou Sissoko, Rose, Moura (European cup final), Vorm ( 2015 Carling cup final) on the bench. Perhaps it was more likely that he wanted to play his best 11 whenever he could.

The one sure thing that you can be sure of about Jose is that he is a winner (as far as i remember he has won things everywhere he has been), there are some who never liked him but that was more on his personality then his record of trophys won. There were a few fans who thought that it would never work with Levy and that he would soon grumble about not getting the players he needed.

I said at the time of his appointment that i was pretty sure that Levy and Jose talked about the transfer budget before he took the job and were on the same page. You do not have to spend fortunes to build a team ( of course it helps but not always) what you do have to have is a mentality of a winner ( and as i have said he has) and also the ability to turn good/inconsistent players into players who are mentality strong.

That is probably his biggest strength and he has started to show that here. Its still early days and i am sure there will be poor/bad results to come over the coming months, but i think its obvious we can all see the improvement in both the players and results and i think we will get better as we go along.

Has Levy changed or has the man working for him?

Seems unlikely that Levy has entirely abandoned his principles that have got him (and us) this far because he's starstruck by Mourinho.

Seems more likely to me that we're now getting better and more immediate transfer targets, along with seeing significant improvement in enough players to make good competition for places.
