Jose Mourinho - SACKED

José Mourinho accused some of his players of “hiding” during Tottenham’s north London derby defeat to Arsenal, pointing to a lack of intensity that led both Gareth Bale and Tanguy Nbombele to be substituted early in the second half.
The main target of Mourinho’s frustration was a sluggish first-half performance in which he admitted Tottenham were fortunate to go in level despite scoring through an ingenious Lamela strike. “We were poor,” he said of the opening 45 minutes. “Defending bad, no intensity, no pressing. In terms of attacking football, some important players hiding. Really bad.”

Mourinho maintained he was “not pointing the finger at player A, B or C” but criticised “people hiding, not showing themselves, no intensity, no passing and moving”. Bale and Ndombele were replaced in the 57th and 62nd minutes respectively, Moussa Sissoko and Dele Alli coming on.

Asked specifically about Bale, he said: “Gareth and Tanguy, we need more intensity in our game. We need to press more, be more intense in the game.”

Another poor team performance when Jose takes ZERO responsibility for anything that went wrong. Class act through and through. I'm sure in his mind this is the best way to motivate the players and we're stuck with him and when we luck our way to the Carabao Cup he'll lord it over the fanbase that he is our best manager ever.

Truly fudging amazing, same exact interview (the piece you didn't bother to quote) -> "I belong to the team so I am as guilty for the first half as the players"

This brick is so tiresome, if you want to blame him for the result, go ahead, but lets try not to manufacture a narrative.

He picked an attacking lineup, pretty much the lineup everyone would have gone for except Doherty over Aurier (and yes I think that cost us and is on him), team wasn't up for it and he needs to own that, but so do some of the players (to me, only two really looked like they gave a brick).

I agree with what he said on today’s performance.

It wasn’t young inexperienced players who let us down today, it was world class superstars, players who normally starting only one of would guarantee you a win, we started four, and they all took the afternoon off*.

*Son only for 20 mins to be fair.

I’ll just interject here
On the sky interview I don’t remember him saying we’re all one team
That however is what’s reported in the post match one
I don’t know if they are the same thing though

And I’m gonna say it again Aurier would have struggled out there today with no support. The lack of awareness from experienced players to cover that side was startling to me.

Probably, but he is a better player

Honestly who fudging knows, Kane, Bale, Son (pre-injury), Ndombele, even PEH had very meh games, all at the same time ..

In a game where we under pressure ....
moura made as many tackles and interceptions as bale, Kane, son, lamela, dele, sissoko and Tanguy combined... with 4 in total
The defenders numbers when you look at them are good but the lack of support in defensive terms from the rest of the team was woeful

Every time I hear Jose say that he wanted the players to do something different at the attacking end, I cringe. You could see today that we were not set up to aggressively press, with Harry and Son not doing so. And we had a break in play for Sons injury for an adjustment. Based on what we can see, Jose doesn’t have the bottle to go toe to toe in the big games. The “rope a dope” tactic worked early in the season but the better teams adjusted. Now we just look scared and ready to concede. Put simply, if the players aren’t playing the way Jose tells them to, what is he doing?

This was the piece I read (apologies for not spending more of my time to get a full transcription of everything The Special One said after the players let him down) - https://www.theguardian.com/footbal...s-tottenham-players-of-hiding-against-arsenal - I have re-read it and don't see that quote.

I admit I detest Mourinho, and even saying that one line doesn't make up for spending way more time slagging off the players for me. That's just my opinion. I prefer a manager who will tear into the players win the dressing room, not in public.

I don't feel sorry for him, he supposedly scouted us and seen it as an easy pick up.
That he could not see the problems in this squad worries me, and I'm not talking about lack of talent in the team, but lack of bottle.
I like Jose, Im not a hater, but I don't think he is the correct fit for us.

Correct fit? I agree. He isn't. My feelings are on record numerous times. But I will always call it as I see it mate, and today is not on him IMO, further is now in a job which he is clearly not really there to do.

Fair enough mate. I personally can and will blame him for this.

The guy I feel sorry for in a funny way is Levy. I honestly believe he earnestly wanted this appointment to work out - I certainly cannot fault him at all for hiring Jose Mourinho the legendary Porto, Chelsea, Inter and Madrid manager.

It's not his fault he got the washed up Stoke-level Mourinho instead - everyone thought he'd changed.

Honestly, the sliding doors moment was 2017, and then 2018. Everything changed during those two summers and two January windows when we self-sabotaged everything that Poch had built. Since then it's all been flailing attempts at damage control with this declining squad.

But Mourinho wanted to be judged on results. His own demand, no one else's.

And when the results run dry, as they have against anyone even slightly decent - he has nowhere to hide, this supposed genius and motivational mastermind.

Mate, did that look like a motivated performance to you?

Tired. Very tired. Several players took a battering Thursday in what to my eye was a filthy game. Check out the pod when it is up as we get into all this.

As for the sliding doors moment, again you'll have noted I have banged that drum hard for several seasons, and I remain convinced we fudged up. That being said, I have also equally said that we are where we are and we need to judge what is here not what we wish was. I am a critic of Mourinho's, but I don't put this one on him. Arteta was smart, we were knackered.

Yes good point. Willian was unnoticeable when he came on.
To an extent I understand where you are coming from regards Jose. But he sets up the team so it’s on him.

Circumstances ? Does that mean Levy ? I think he should shoulder a part of the blame myself.
Jose was never the right appointment for where we were at the time. More so now
.

It was always my belief that Poch should've been given time to rebuild. But it has long gone now. We are where we are.

Encouraging to see Poch suffer a crushing defeat today - 2-1 at home against 18th placed Nantes.

PSG now three out of first with season-defining matches coming up next two games - at Lyon, whom they're tied with for second - and home to Lille, in first by three points. Lose both those and he'll be available to return to Spurs very soon.

Stay strong, my friends. The futballero is coming home.

if he can’t win the league with PSG he shouldn’t be allowed back

I heard him say that on the channel I watch. We don't have Sky. We have DSTV here. Is Sky purposefully editting interviews?

Serge is much better, but I agree - Bale just couldn’t be arsed - he just stopped running for the first goal.

FWIW the line "I'm not going to mention individuals as the team is the team. I belong to the team and I am just as guilty as the players for that first half” is from 3m51s into the interview footage Sky broadcast and uploaded to their YouTube channel.

Just realised that people are referring to two separate interviews. There is pitch side and there is post match where the press can ask questions. I watched the post match pitch side interviews.

Yeah the full interview
On TV a I think they showed about 90 seconds of that

He did bring in players with some leadership ability in them. Hojbjerg, Hart. A great left back in Reguilon with loads of intensity. A "winner" in Bale.

I think he knew very well what the team lacked, but he hasn't been able to fix it yet.

Shades of the poor intensity that plagued the team under Pochettino for the last 10 months in the league.

It's on Mourinho to sort out now though. Plenty of work left to be done by him, or someone else.

I've never seen leadership in Hart, he shouts a lot, but that's not leadership.
Peh talks a good game, much like some of our other players, but again little actual evidence of leadership. He's not been here that long so willing to cut him some slack.

This isn't a management thing, it goes above that in my opinion
