Lucas Bergvall

Highlights why being out of Europe is a disaster

Players like Bergvall, Senesi, Gray (in midfield), Tel should be finding their chops in those kind of games

He did have a good game in possession but still lacks in his defensive duties. He doesn’t yet have good instincts for anticipating the opposition’s movements or the tenacity and drive that Bents has for example.

Overall very glad to see him play 90 minutes but I still think he has plenty of room for development.

So as with a lot of young players that can hurt the opposition, we need to figure out how to use him while he's learning that muscle. e.g. play him higher so the chance of him losing the ball on the edge of our box is reduced

Trouble is I think he has less chance to run with the ball when he’s higher, which is probably his biggest strength.

I think sometimes with young players you just have to accept they’ll make mistakes while gaining their experience.

It's a reason a lot of them start in wide midfield then move in.

But agree, he needs to learn, we need to take a risk

It’s a shame we went out of the cup as we lost the opportunity to pair him with Bents again. Together they looked a good combo but they’ll probably only get the chance to start again if both Tonali and Fernandes are injured.

He was tidy in possession. Nothing spectacular but kept the ball moving effectively and efficiently and didn’t cough the ball up. Put a real creative player in front of him so he can play off him without the responsibility to make it all happen, and he may become more vital to the team.
