*** Official Film Thread ***

In the past week, I’ve watched Green Book, Spider-man: Into the Spiderverse, and Ralph breaks the internet. The last of those three being the worst of the three films. The first two were very enjoyable and would be in my consideration if I was compiling a top ten films of the year list.

I thought Ralph breaks the internet was completely generic and average, such a shame considering how good the first one was.

Definitely, I mean it had some fun moments along the way but it felt like a long film. The pacing was off, and it didn’t have the charm of the original. I think it’s suffered as a sequel as it could never maintain the fresh pace of the original.

Little one is ill today so I'm at home with her

Have watched White Boy Rick and Hotel Artemis, both really good films, most enjoyable this morning

Bloody love the Coen Brothers, but they haven't really done anything near their best for the last ten years.

I remember watching Blood Simple not that long after it came out. Thinking, these guys are really good. And then watching Raising Arizona and thinking --what the fudge. Both great films, but not exactly similar.
The Hudsucker Proxy, although not that well-known, is my favourite Coen brothers film, although there are a couple of later films I have yet to see.

Just out of interest. I'm always looking for good films that I've missed. Anyone want to recommend their top five films from Jan 2016 to now - in case there is something I should have watched but haven't. Any genre, including foreign language films (other than - in anticipation - porn films, thanks, as I'm sure I haven't missed any of those).

Aquaman - big fun.

Its entirely predictable, youll know exactly how it will finish within the first 10 minutes, but...

...Its exactly what these films should be. Fun, funny, silly, not too serious, and a big adventure/quest. It was almost like watching an Indiana Jones film.

For what it is, I really enjoyed it.

Logan - best film of last year
Baby Driver - it has Kevin Spacey in it but good film otherwise
Thor Ragnarok
Paddington 2 - a lot better than you’d think
It
The Greatest Showman
Green Book
Spider-Man into the Spiderverse
A Quiet Place
Coco
Avengers: Infinity War
Hacksaw Ridge

There are a few mainstream entries off of the top of my head, I’m sure you will have seen many of those. I’ll think of more over next day to add.

Some of my 2018 favourites, excluding those El Guepado already mentioned:

Widows
Isle of Dogs
Loveless
Hostiles
Three Billboards
Blackkklansman
I Tonya
You Were Never Really Here
Molly’s Game
Annihilation

2016

I didnt see, but supposedly very good:
Split
Moonlight
Hacksaw Ridge
Dont Breath
The Shallows
Silence
Swiss Army Man
Train to busan
A cure for wellness
The Belko Experiment

Comic book:
Deadpool
- loved it. Even if you dont like comic movies theres every chance youll enjoy this taking the tinkle out of them.
Captain America: Civil War - one of the best Marvel films. kind of Avengers 2.5, a much better movie than Ultron!

Kids:
Miss Peregrines Home for Peculiar Children
: Tim Burton not producing a turd for once. Eva Green is just hypnotic. Good fun, creepy, kids film. Almost "old Burton" type of movie.
Jungle Book: These live action Disney movies are very hit and miss, this one a hit for me.
Moana : Classic Disney. Really well done Disney though. The guy from Flight of the Concords voicing a giant crab is a highlight. As well as the fact I cant help but love The Rock.
Zootropolis : Animal society divided on lines of Predators vs Prey. Obvious social commentary but very well done.
Kubo and the 2 Strings : Just wonderful. Laika make the best stop animation and this one delivers in spades.
Petes Dragon
The BFG
: Both deliver exactly what you think they will

Anime:
Your Name : Probably my film of the year. Its just beautiful, and amazing to think it was a directorial debut.
Gantz: O : Visually stunning movie, messed up monster design, and a decent story. I really enjoyed it.

Action:
Rogue One: A star wars story. I liked it. Not blown away by it, and it seems divisive, but there was a lot about it I enjoyed. A film in the Star Wars universe without magic powers, it works.
Star Trek: Beyond: The first one was passable, the second fudging awful - this one was good. Simon Peg wrote it, Justin Lin directed. So no Kurtsman/Orci/Abrahms and its better, who would have thought?
The Accountant : Ben Affleck plays an autistic Accountant by day, hardcore killer of bad guys by night. Was pretty good.
Now you see me 2 : Magicians pull of completely improbable heists. If you liked the first one youll like this, more of the same. It has Woody Harrelson in it so is automatically worth watching.
The Nice Guys : Shane Black at his best, one of my films of the year. I even liked Gosling in it and I dont like him in anything.

Drama:
Hidden Figures : Story of NASA in the 60s and the progress (or not) of the black ladies trying to make their way during segregation and the space race. Brilliant film.
Colossal : A woman awakes to find that she controls a giant kaiju monster in Seoul. Sounds mental, and the premise is, but holy fudge this film cuts very deep emotionally. The whole kaiju schtick is just a tool for getting into the characters, its not what the films about at all. Brilliant.

Comedy:
Bad Moms : Im a sucker for Mila Kunis, and Kristen Bell - and as a parent a lot of it is easy to identify with. Enjoyed it.
Sausage Party : Seth Rogen takes on an animated film. Its not brilliant, some bits really dont work, but when its funny holy fudge is it funny. Worth watching, and if you do MAKE SURE you see it through to the end. The last 10 minutes simply cannot be unseen.
Hunt for the Wilderpeople : Taika Waititi before Ragnorok. A genuine, heartwarming, emotional, and hilarious film. Another one for film of the year for me.

2017

I didnt see, but supposedly very good:
Blade Runner 2049. Denis Villeneuve, always worth watching.
IT
Get Out
The Disaster Artist
Darkest Hour
Mollys Game
Logan Lucky
Brawl in Cell Block 99
Professor Marsten and the Wonder Women
I dont feel at home in this world anymore
Loving Vincent
Ingrid Goes West
Mayhem

Comic book:
Thor Ragnorok
: Even if you dont like Comic book films, this one is just so much fun Id be amazed if you didnt like it.
Wonder Woman : The best Marvel movie DC have made. Third act falls apart into generic CGI flimflam, but everything up to that is VERY good.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 : Brilliant.
Logan : Not as good, IMHO, as the hype suggests. But even so, it is VERY good. While being a super hero movie, thats really not what its about.

Kids:
Jumangi: Welcome to the jungle
: Already established, I love The Rock, so Im possibly biased, but, this is way better than it had any right to be. Particular highlight is Jack Black playing a teenage girl stuck in a middle aged mans body - like the film, it shouldnt, but it works.
Lego Batman Movie : Theres no way anything could follow the Lego movie. Except this. It pulls it off. So, so funny, and if you are in any way a Batman fan its basically a love letter to you.
Captain Underpants : Kids made me watch it. I did so begrudgingly. Ended up loving it, it really has spirit and imagination.

Action:
Kong Skull Island: Alsmost feels like a throw back to old school action movies. Nothing ground breaking, but a lot of fun in a "check your brain at the door" way.
Baby Driver : One of the films of the year, I loved it. Pure Edgar Wright indulgence.
John Wick 2 : Manages to continue from the first in much the same way as the original, while expanding the whole lore/universe. Something it is far better at than a straight up shooter usually is.
Kingsman Golden Circle : Not as good as the first, but still huge fun. Inventive action. ANd possibly one of the best all time cameos.
Fast and Furious 8 : Its crap. But its GREAT crap. The action is ridiculous, and its massive fun.
King Arthur: Legend of the Sword : Got universally panned. I liked it. A lot, thought it was fun. I do have a soft spot for Guy Richie though, and really enjoyed seeing him play with medieval lore instead of London gangsters.
Atomic Blonde : John Wick. In the 80s. In Berlin. With Charlize Theron. Doesnt quite live up to John Wick, but it is fudging close.

Drama:
The Shape of Water : Guillermo Del Torro at his peak. Visually stunning. Sweet, and strange, film.
Wonder : Highly emotional story of a disfigured boy finding his way in school after a very protected upbringing. There will be tears.

Comedy:
Bad Moms Christmas : If you liked the first, youll like this. More of the same.
Baywatch : I thought this was fudging hilarious. Another Rock movie that has no right to be as good as it is. ENTIRELY tongue in cheek, the whole thing is equally a homage and tinkletake of the original show. Not one for the kids though, a few bits in there you wouldnt want them to see!
The Hitmans Bodyguard : Solid action comedy. And who doesnt enjoy Sam L Jackson and Ryan Reynolds playing off each other?

2018

I didnt see, but supposedly very good:
Blackkklansman
Mandy
Overlord
Hereditary
Game Night
Upgrade
Apostle
Hotel Artemis
Isle of Dogs

Comic book:
Aquaman
- loved it. Its a throw back to what these films should be, a crazy quest.
Avengers: Infinity War : Its really that good.
Venom: Its rubbish. Seriously, is not a good film. But it finds such a bizarre tone its really quite fun. One to watch, and when its finished sit confused as to how you can like such a pile of brick.
Deadpool 2 : Its not as good (or fresh) as the first, but if you liked that youll like this.

Kids:
The House with a Clock in its walls
: Eli Roth does a spooky kids film. And it works. Watched it with my 9 year old, and it struck just the right tone to have her scared and still having fun.
Christopher Robin: Its sickly sweet, a lovely little film.
Teen Titans Go! To the Movies: Its just brilliant. Its a take down of the whole comic cinema tidal wave, the divide between marvel and dc fans, comic lore in general, and its also a funny as hell movie aimed at kids. Its quite brilliant. Almost Lego Movie good.

Action:
The Meg:
B movie throwaway nonsense. And it knows it. Had a lot of fun with it.
Solo: A star wars movie : I liked it. Not an amazing film, a solid 6. BUT, I liked it. Again, the Star Wars universe works without the jedi. In some ways it works better, IMO.
Rampage : Yes, as if it wasnt obvious by now, I love The Rock. Went into this with no expectation and thoroughly enjoyed it - for what it is. Its not winning any oscars, but its a great bit of action escapism.
The Night comes for us : John Wick like action film from Indonesia. Not much in the way of story, but holy fudge the action is insane.

Comedy:
The Spy Who Dumped Me
: Mila Kunis again, with Kate McKinnon, its funny, I liked it.

Split - okay but I’m not a huge Shyamalan fan
Moonlight - didn’t quite meet the hype imho
Hacksaw Ridge - quality gritty war movie
Dont Breath - I’m not a big horror buff but still enjoyed this
The Shallows - Deadpool’s missus has got a figure worthy of Baywatch, otherwise bit meh
Swiss Army Man - very oddball but worth a look
The Belko Experiment - disappointing, certainly no Battle Royale

Blade Runner 2049 - fantastic follow up to a classic, watched this twice in IMAX
IT - nice nostalgic horror
Get Out - brilliant satirical thriller
Darkest Hour - middle of the road historical drama
Mollys Game - another tour de force from Chastain with a great Costner cameo
Logan Lucky - I’m not a big fan of Soderbergh but really enjoyed this crime caper
Brawl in Cell Block 99 - recorded this ages ago but unwatched

Blackkklansman - brilliant comedy drama
Mandy - on my Prime watchlist
Overlord - popcorn zombie war movie that almost burst my eardrums in IMAX
Hereditary - on watchlist

Isle of Dogs - another highly enjoyable Wes Anderson film

@SteveAWOL , thanks.

Split- not a Shyamalan fan at all, but heard nothing but good things.

Mollys Game - good to hear, been looking forward to it

I really recommend I, Tonya too. Best film I saw this year. I didn't think it was a great year for film but I didn't see too many either. The only other ones I really enjoyed were Say Goodbye to Christopher Robin and My Cousin Rachel.
