Two and a half hours watching Tenet with a mask on in the cinema wasn’t a great Sat night.

Our Odeon allows you to take your mask off once in your seat.

We went to see Unhinged last week (only 6 people in to watch, so no distancing issues), not sure Russell Crowe will play a Gladiator again, he's put some timber on.

Decent film though 8/10

Debating on watching Tenet, so had a read of the plot via Wikipedia, and it seems really complex. Might leave it until it arrives on Sky.

I thought the sound mix on Dunkirk was excellent.

I tend to watch his stuff at home anyway. The demands on a sound system in a smallish room are much lower and you can tweak the centre up if it's really hard to hear.

Assume you have a Dolby Atmos setup at home?

As I watched Dunkirk in local IMAX first time around and found the dialogue was slightly garbled but when I did an encore in Superscreen (which has Atmos system) I found the sound balance was much better.

From what I’ve read the sound production teams are often in such a rush to complete mixes in the myriad of cinematic formats that corners are cut, which helps explain why some versions sound better than others and the extra months before home release allows them to fine tune things even better.

Yeah, Atmos although the ceiling speakers are dogbrick cheapness so they don't really do much other than immersion.

The real point for my set up is that it's tweaked to my preference for the two people sat right in the centre. All the speakers (except the centre) are at ear level(ish) and there are no obstructions.

That makes for a far better sound stage than a cinema full of people where the speakers have to be optimised for everyone to hear.

True. Using Audyssey to optimise my speaker setup (although I manually adjusted the crossover frequency) really did help me appreciate the surround sound sweet spot.

IMAX’s new 12.0 setup does seem to do a fairly good job for most seating positions in my experience but I would like to sit in the centre of an all singing and dancing 64.2 channel Dolby Cinema auditorium at some point though.

Been sound mixers/engineers on nolans films say the muffled dialogue is deliberate as he wants to make you concentrate and draw you into the film.
Not a huge fan of his I have to say. Interstellar being one of the worst movies I've ever seen.

I bloody love Interstellar, one of my fave films of recent years. I do understand your point about muffled dialogue i picked up on how annoying it was in Interstellar, didn't realise was intentional. But the story of space exploration in that manner was magnificent, especially when they're on the Water planet. Blew my little mind that did.

Really didn't get interstellar at all tbh. For me it was a case of a film trying to be too clever.
I can see why some would like it, just isn't for me.
Nolan films are either good or bad, he doesn't do mediocre. Which I like, he's not playing it safe and churning out pap.

That is a brilliant article and one I wholly agree with.
So frustrating that action sequences are ear-splittingly loud, and then you can't hear what they are saying.

Same for me, it was cinematic over indulgence.

That is one of my complaints of many directors like Nolan, sometimes they go OTT to fulfill some cinematic ego, for me Interstellar was dreadful

Is it still in 2 parts? I remember reading a while ago that it was being split into 2 films as the story was too big to squeeze into one. Looks good though.
