Dejan Kulusevski in training Oct 26

Roberto De Zerbi has given an update on how James Maddison and Dejan Kulusevski have responded to milestone appearances against Coventry City on Monday night.
Madders returned from his long-term knee injury at the end of last season, but made his first start since 1 May, 2025 and completed 70 minutes against the Sky Blues, rifling in a superb opening goal in our 3-1 win.

Deki, meanwhile, stepped off the bench for 11 minutes (three, plus eight added time) for his first action since 11 May, 2025 following his knee issues.

Press Conference: De Zerbi speaks to the media ahead of Chelsea trip
Roberto was asked in his pre-match press conference on Friday how the pair had recovered, and responded: “In the first three days Maddison didn't work with us, I don't know if he's ready for tomorrow. Kulusevski worked well, but in the first day he stayed individual.

“We can play also with Mathys Tel, we can play with Marmoush inside, we can play with Gallagher, or we have more solutions considering Pedro Porro can play. Like I said many times, I don't want to take risks, because if you analyse this period of European football, you can see many injuries for Tottenham, for everyone. So, if I can, I don't want to take risks to lose many players for many games.”

Three days, like I said.👍

Indeed, I have oft gazed at the plankton in the stands with awe (apologies to plankton who actually constitute a very important part of our ecosystem unlike those t ossers!

You had me until the "and some toss-y rugby ars-es who decided to jump on the footy waggon" line.

Football lost it's class many years ago. It's sold it's soul to Murdoch and all those red t_wats from Sky. Today's football has absolutely no moral high ground to have a pop at noble sports like rugby and cricket.

I hate those Chelscum idiots as much as the next guy but I have a feeling they were never contributing plankton within the rugby community.

Anyway, don't care if we need to ruck and maul a bit tomorrow to get a result.

Similar setup to Monday but with Senesi in the full back role.

Kinsky
Porro JPVH VDV Senesi
Gray Tonali Gallagher
Kudus Solanke Marmoush

Subs: Dubravka, Robertson, Davies, Tosin, Fernandes, Maddison, Kulusevski, Savio, Tel
Surely Robbo will be at left back instead of Senesi, but I’d say you’re right other than that

My GHod, if we could win, it would be the catalyst for our season—especially since quite a few winnable matches are coming up. I hope to see Tonali and Fernandes in midfield, with Gallagher in the number 10 role—hopefully scoring a goal against his former team!

He hadn’t trained with the main group group for 3 days but was doing individual work.
Not that bad.
"I don't know if they start on the pitch or on the bench but they are both available to play. We have to manage both in the best way we can because they are different players, in qualities, in personality in experience, and we need them."
Yet more examples of De Zerbi's poor communication skills. Says one thing, then contradicts himself later.

I don't think you will see that midfield combo start though. Most likely Porro will return at RB with Gray being maintained in midfield with Tonali.

I do think Gallagher will get the nod over Madds though.

Don't really think it's that difficult to understand what he's saying. And why shouldn't he be vague anyway, or he might aswell just send Alonso a PDF with his team lineup and tactics included....
He said one thing, then just a few hours later changed his mind. 🤦🏻‍♂️

All these repeats of dele's goal. I really wish he was working at the club. I think he still wants to play? But he should be helped here. Tottenham is his home. I really feel for the guy when he talks. Read that dier doesn't keep up with him anymore either.

Did he though, I haven't seen a contradiction but please post it if you know where he contradicted himself. AI says:

Exact Quote from the Press Conference:
"In the first three days Maddison didn't work with us, I don't know if he's ready for tomorrow... Like I said many times, I don't want to take risks, because if you analyse this period of European football, you can see many injuries... So if I can, I don't want to take risks to lose many players for many games."

Key Takeaway: Maddison did not train with the main group for the first three days following the Coventry match, making his readiness highly uncertain, but he presumably HAS trained with the main group since then.

Later briefing:
"James Maddison is experiencing frustrating small problems that prevent him from consistently training. Although his current injury is not severe and he could play tomorrow, the Premier League's physical demands require players to be in peak condition to compete effectively."

Key Takeaway: Physically capable does not equal match-ready. While the injury isn't severe enough to completely rule him out, De Zerbi won't compromise his long-term fitness.

Rather than a contradiction, De Zerbi's comments highlight the distinction between a player being medically available ("could play") and being match-fit according to his strict managerial standards.

Someone tacotery rumoured that Maddison still has a hairline fracture in his shoulder from being smashed to the floor a few games ago, and that is why he had so much strapping on his shoulders and neck area in the Coventry game. No idea if that is true, I don't want to spread falsehoods.

Anyway, I suspect RDZ will opt for a high intensity pressing midfield to cause Cheatski problems i.e. Tonali Gray Gallagher etc rather than Madders, in the hope Cheatski crumble and can't get the ball to their elite forwards.
