Politics, politics, politics (so long and thanks for all the fish)

I live in Clacton, I am absolutely praying that one of the parties gives a decent candidate.

Many people here look no further than the town itself for the news. He actually won with a majority of a fairly brick turnout - this is the bit people forget because it doesn’t fit the “Clacton = all racists” narrative.

Unfortunately, it wouldn’t surprise me to see him reelected, or we get some restore muppet instead. Tactical voting here I come.

Do you think the Tories would have a reasonable chance if they do put up a decent candidate?

I think they’re probably the only real hope outside of a Reform/Restore/Regroup/Racism first candidate.

Labour in the last election had someone running but told him not to campaign by all accounts, saw him out and about once or twice but then he just vanished. I think they decided the seat was lost and decided to focus on other areas.

You won’t get a green candidate or similar winning anything around here. There’s a lot of older people who genuinely believe ol Nige is telling them the truth and that he’s one of them - he jumps on the generational racism of how “things have changed” since their day, and then the other half are people who have been genuinely convinced that stopping the boats will put money in their pocket and get them a better standard of living. You talk to numerous people around there who just would not vote for anyone else regardless of what the bloke does.

It’s long been a UKIP, BNP, Reform type seat. I think the tories are the only ones who could potentially do something. I can’t see Labour having much of any sway at all currently.

I see Nige has offered that Reform will pay for the election because they have instigated it, and is writing to Rachel Reeves.
I don't see how the government can let one party pay for an election - so straightaway it becomes the government are wasting taxpayers money.

Yeh I was wondering that, surely offering to pay for an election looks like a PR tool to use therefore can't be accepted

I loved Clacton as a kid, went there for holidays, enjoyed playing in beach defence bunkers.

Yeah, it’s not “The most extreme right wing place in the UK” 🙄 it’s an underfunded seaside town, with a lot of elderly and retired people who could do with experiencing some more broad horizons in addition to the rather large one at the end of the pier.

Took my 2 youngest grandkids there about 10 years ago they loved the amusement park on the front and mini golf but the highlight for them was the gulls outside McDonald's attacking the food.

Yeah sorry, that was clumsy. Statistically it has the most right wing electorate. But that doesn't mean there's not unfortunate reasons behind it, or plenty of decency and ambition amongst its populace too.

I'm actually quite fond of faded seaside glamour towns right down the east coast - redcar, bridlington, grimsby, skegness, felixstowe etc
