The case for the defence

Guess everyone knows by now that none of our midfielders have any defensive awareness, which might help explain why all 3 of them were lined up in no man’s land just as Palmer was about to whip in his cross for their goal.

what a mess

and what is Son doing, miles from his man

why is Solanke so far back, what kind of an out ball is he there if its turned over

Not for the first time this season, one must ask who is Romero marking? If he was marking Jackson, maybe VDV could mark the goalscorer rather than leave Udogie with two to mark.

Udogie knows he want to get around on the pivot but instructions are to hold the line at all costs. He is not allowed to.

There were so many great moments where we played Chelsea offside tonight. I can just tell from that picture that this was one of the few where it didn't work. It is a high risk system and needs tweaking. We rely way too much on the offside line in my opinion.

That’s true
But why does VDV go forward to the man Romero should be marking
That’s a decision the players have made
Just like the chance in the first 40 seconds…. The decision making is horrendous

Perhaps our captain should shout some instructions to his defenders, what with Son having the perfect view of what’s unfolding from his viewpoint on the edge of our area.

He doesn’t ever speak
He is comfortably the worst captain Ive seen at the club
@tommysvr i genuinely don’t know how you can defend son
I appreciate you have an Asian connection but do you watch these games?
their captain scored.
Their captain nailed his numbers and delivered
But that’s not the key bit.
Their captain lead his team
Ours doesn’t do anything. He barely speaks. He isnt showing any on the pitch leadership
How can you defend him?

Son is a shocking captain.

Said this before, but you'd get all Son's senior attributes anyway. He doesn't need to wear the armband to give that charisma and mentorship to the group around the place. We need an actual leader on the pitch. That isn't Son.

Anyone can lead, they don't have to wear an armband to do it. Being captain is more about being a front figure than the designated leader of the team.

I defend him because I have an Asian connection? Jesus fudging Christ.

Well why else would you defend him as captain?
It can’t be because of what he is doing on the pitch
There has to be some bias there

He’s Korean
I live in Japan
And I generally don’t base my opinion of a player on their nationality.

If 15 grown men can't motivate themselves or recognise how to play successfully then that is a bigger issue than who is captain (or even manager)
