The transfer thread

To me it’s a no brainer
There is also Angel Gomes that too
Both are out to contact and the kind that you can sign and sell on at a later date for a paper profit if need be. And I know people would say wages.. but there would be minimal fee
If I were Jonathan David I would not touch us with a barge pole.

After tonight and tomorrow's games, it will be clear which CL clubs cannot possibly progress.
At that point they may want to offload players.
E.g. clubs such as Young Boys, Red Bull Salzberg, Red Bull Leipzig, Sturm Graz, Red Star Belgrade, Girona, Sparta Prague, Shakhtar Donetsk, Bologna.
This will become clearer tomorrow night. And definite around 30Jan. The transfer window ends 3Feb.

Likewise for EL and ECL clubs. Currently E.g. Dynamo Kyiv, Nice, Rigas, Qarabag, Malmo, Twente, Slavia Prague etc.

So this may kickstart some actual DECISIONS once those clubs know for sure where their season is heading.

You might say those TEAMS are not very good, but scattered within their squads are some star players we just haven't heard of yet. That is what Lange is paid to find.

Yeah, those Red Bull clubs always have gems in them. Sesko is probably the best known.

Xavi Simons has been mentioned in the past. On loan from PSG though.

But will we? We have had some good finds but wouldn't say amazing finds other than Bergvall.

We rarely seem to find a Cunha or a Raphinha. I hope he does but always seems that the smaller clubs find a gem and we end up trying to get them after a few years at a prem club.

I agree though there are loads out there, the number 7 for Lille last night was class as were a few others.

Depends what you mean by "finds" - how unknown would they have to be fall into that category? Bergvall. Kinsky? Sarr? Udogie? Vuskovic seems like an excellent prospect.

Amazing finds are rare at most clubs. Some of those that end up looking like that take time to get to that level, I'm definitely not against signings for the future, but right now what they can do short term matters quite a lot.

Those amazing finds, fairly unknown, very good short term and potentially amazing players are really rare.

Very good point.

Should we have gone for a player we could have gotten earlier in the window or wait until later to see if we can get a player rated higher (within the club)? Can definitely see the argument for needing someone in early in the window, but I will always lean towards taking the time needed to try to get the best player we can.

Assuming we will actually do some real business this January. Not doing more than Kinsky seems poor.

How about coaches ..do we need a dedicated fitness coach and set piece coach. I really feel we need to upgrade on our defensive coach.

Scot munn is supposed to take care of all these. Is he a football guy or just some senior manager that can get along with Levy?

Cunha cost wolves £38M
Rafinha cost Leeds £16m
Both were well known players
If say that these gems are harder to find because everyone has the same way of finding them

No I know, but what I mean is it always seems like us and others are after the lesser say teams players like wolves, Bournemouth, Brentford. Players that yes can already be known but why didn't we take a punt before? Is £18m on Rafinha a punt or very good business regardless? Seems like we are so mixed with our scouting that we are happy to pay £65m on Solanke but won't say, spend £38m on Cunha, and it looks like we are now interested in him but it will cost us £50m or maybe £70m, which is very unlikely to happen.

I wouldn't say it's clear....

As I noted in the CL thread....it's ridiculous how tight the CL group is.
Arsenal in 5th are 3pts ahead of Stuttgart in 21st.

I don't think there are enough games to sort out such a large league.
The permutations are silly.

I think Gray and Bergvall were both always for the senior squad. They basically replaced Skipp and Hojbjerg. And Odobert was always likely to be our first choice LWF.

Interesting not calling Austin and Whiteman seniors, when they are both about 34!
Gray, Bergval and Odobert are still kids. suspect the plan was to ease all three of them into the team.

There is no way that Odobert was signed as a first choice LWF. He would've been behind Son and maybe also Richarlison. Perhaps even Werner (otherwise what was the point of signing him?). Odobert is a very talented player. (remember that I called him out as a signing I'd like to see us make prior to us signing him - though did say I thought we should sign him and then leave him at Burnley for another year). However he still has a lot of developing to do to reach his potential.

These are not players that would play anything other than a tiny bit part for top 4 teams.

Austin and Whiteman - senior in age, kids in terms of their experience.... Pretty clear that neither were intended to be used - look at how we quickly got Kinsky (actually another kid in goalkeeping terms) immediately when Forster got ill.

Probably unpopular but with 6 months left on his contract I would be looking at Jonathan David and putting most of our money into midfield personally. Wide areas I think we can cope for now, CB I think looks stronger in a couple of weeks except maybe LB. Summer I would be focusing on WF when more are available
I've never really been massively impressed with David. He's not really a number 9 and not really a wide forward. He might suit us in that he is available on a free this summer and probably would still fit into our wage structure even accounting for bigger wages due to no transfer fee but I don't see him as appropriate competition/cover for Solanke and am not sure he'd be great as a wide forward.
