Toby Alderweireld

I thought he started the season off well but he was caught out a lot last night, to be honest we need to find a couple of fullbacks who can give our C/B's some DECENT cover as both Aurier and Rose are poor. Even Jan was left exposed on far too many occasions.
 
Toby looks done. Out of the contract Three he is also someone I would stop playing. We have Sanchez, Foyth and Tanganga who can play. Lets drop Toby to the bench and only play him when we are forced to. He looks slow, out of position and lacking.
 
Needs to play as one of the double pivot until we can bring some one else in. He can put a foot in and also start off attacks with his magical long range passing.

If you look at the financial drivers and aspects around the club at the moment, it’s clear Levy didn’t want to/couldn’t afford to just churn the whole playing staff over in a 12-18 month window.

Levy still sees value in the investments made in our squad, regardless of their (not ridiculous) ages.

Poch was fudged though with a squad with an average age of 28/29, not <24 as they can’t run like he demands (and they were already broken from doing it for 5 years for him). Compare Poch and Dembele, to Redknapps Indian summer from Ledley.

I have to believe that Mourinhos more reserved and tactically cuter way of playing appealed to Levy for the reasons above. Not flogging his players into the ground like carthorses, has to be an attractive proposition to the money men who don’t want a bag of broken bones thrown back at them.

Therefore, I totally see Jose utilising so many of the players who were burnt out under Poch.

Toby and Jan could do an amazing job still if they aren’t being stretched out, and do have a midfield shield which is tactically and positionaly astute - not missing in action or also running around like headless chickens. They are both brilliant footballers, passers and clever defenders - they just aren’t going to want to leave space in behind with a constant high line and be forced to get into many foot races against Daniel James for example! :)

100% and I think that people will be happy with more conservative football in the short term if it brings results but I think that after a honeymoon period, we will start demanding more expansive football that Mourinho cannot provide.

He did. Rode him like a Blackpool donkey until he couldn’t take anymore.

Way I see it, we have 3 disillusioned world class players about to walk out the door for free, leaving huge holes at the back, and creatively.

We have 2 x £22m-£25m investments in Aurier and even Lucas Moura which are still to pay off - one more dramatically than the other of course.

We have 3 star midfield players in Dier, Wanyama and Dele almost unplayable due to poor form following long term injury/illness.

We have £120m of summer signings not yet firing on all/many cylinders - and all previously tagged with the infuriating ‘not going to be ready for 12 months’ new signings brush.

We also have high potential academy players who have started to stagnate, such as KWP and Skipp.

If Jose can start to rapidly reverse even a few of those situations above, then I genuinely think we are going to fudging motor!!!
 
Jose Mourinho replaced the Tottenham boss last week and all of a sudden it would appear as if Alderweireld's future at Spurs is a lot less gloomy.

Speaking to Belgian outlet HLN, he said: "I am happy that I’m playing. I’m proud to work with a manager that has won it all. I am grateful that I can become a better player under him. I want to repay him for the faith he has shown in me."
 
It will be interesting if there is a u-turn as it will hint they may have had an issue with Poch and his methods or just stopped believing in them.

The real question is do we want him to stay? He has looked off the pace and poor positionally for a good 18 months now (since the WC) so is that temporary or will a new manager and tactics cure this?

I think we need to replace him and Jan in time though not in the same window so would be happy with a 1 year extension to ease the transition but I'd be disappointed if he was first choice next year unless there's a rapid improvement in his form.

That's a bit rich from toby, by most accounts poch stepped in to get hi a better contract and toby got greedy, what was wro g with repaying that boss?
Let's face it Toby, you fudged up and this is a chance to redeem yourself, nothing else.
