If you look at the financial drivers and aspects around the club at the moment, it’s clear Levy didn’t want to/couldn’t afford to just churn the whole playing staff over in a 12-18 month window.
Levy still sees value in the investments made in our squad, regardless of their (not ridiculous) ages.
Poch was fudged though with a squad with an average age of 28/29, not <24 as they can’t run like he demands (and they were already broken from doing it for 5 years for him). Compare Poch and Dembele, to Redknapps Indian summer from Ledley.
I have to believe that Mourinhos more reserved and tactically cuter way of playing appealed to Levy for the reasons above. Not flogging his players into the ground like carthorses, has to be an attractive proposition to the money men who don’t want a bag of broken bones thrown back at them.
Therefore, I totally see Jose utilising so many of the players who were burnt out under Poch.
Toby and Jan could do an amazing job still if they aren’t being stretched out, and do have a midfield shield which is tactically and positionaly astute - not missing in action or also running around like headless chickens. They are both brilliant footballers, passers and clever defenders - they just aren’t going to want to leave space in behind with a constant high line and be forced to get into many foot races against Daniel James for example!
