VAR: Sponsored by Chelsea

Surely the lino has to be onto that one tonight too? Yes, not a corner but those mistakes genuinely happen to/fopr everyone.

It’s not a biggie imo, we know from the stats that corners are easy to defend.

What is it, 1 goal from every one hundred corners or something on average.

That we defended the ensuing one so badly isn’t on the officials.

On a wider point, we have seen many poor decisions from officials this season, but nowhere near as many bad decisions as we have seen from our players. We need to get our own house in order before we start on anyone else.

So Arsenal have had 1400 corners so far this season?

All day long.

You give these football idiots great technology and they don't use it properly. It would take about 3 seconds for the video ref to tell the on pitch ref that it is a goal kick. Eventually players would stop appealing as they know the tech would get the decision right.

It's farcical to me that the video ref can't help his mate out.

Nobody tonight is to blame though. They are just operating to instruction. It does need changing though.
It's odd. Even my Arse supporting mate whom which I watched the game, agreed it's weird that video refs can't make these calls. These are easy calls, made in a few seconds - quick enough that the flow of the game isn't interrupted. What’s not to like?

Of course, if it was implemented, I'm sure you'd eventually have three-four minutes long debates about whether it was a corner or not...

There is a strong (and weird) resistance to letting VAR referee the game.

Same about yellow card decisions. It makes no sense that VAR can issue red cards, but not yellows. Especially not second yellows, where the consequences of the decision is exactly the same as with a direct red.

If only they made sure VAR quickly and efficiently handled all the blatantly obvious refereeing errors during a game (including corners, free kicks, throw ins and yellow cards), I'm sure people would be much moe supportive of it.

Just let the ref go to the screen whenever they feel the need.

Do not hold your breath for that to happen, most of the guys i know who go to games think VAR is brick.

No.
They have always been able to check to see if the ball is out of play or not for a goal. It's in the phase of play leading up to a goal.

We saw it a few times last year.

Who the ball comes off for a corner, it's in the phase before the goal is scored.

VAR should only be used for factual wrongs, and not interfere in situations where it's 50-50 one way or the other. Let that be the on field refs decision.

Hopefully that rule shall get amended next season when the AI malarkey is able to do these checks within seconds.

Supporters and teams in Norway have voted against further use of VAR in Norway, which could mean it not being used in the 2025 season (subject to oh holy Norwegian equivalent of FA's opinion). It can be done, England! Throw that brick out!

It's a genie that won't go back in the bottle.

I should imagine it will be temporary if it happens, a season of contentious issues ignored in the game but being played back over and over from every angle in slow motion with added grids at half time, full time, and all evening, will soon bring it back.

The game can't survive without using VAR as the broadcasters have it anyway.

I think you're right. I just hope they manage to implement it better and enforce it fair, not the way it is today where it's completely random whether two similar situations are penalised the same or not. I also wish for there to be quick automatic decisions by say sensors or something, so that if a player is offside or handballs then a light will blink or something and the play is stopped immediately. My biggest gripe with VAR is not being able to spontaneously celebrate a goal. Get that one right, and I'm sure a lot of people could become friends with VAR.

My biggest gripe with football is that people think goals are something that should be celebrated. :p
