Yang Min-Hyeok

Oh crikey I'm probably mixing up home grown and club trained again; the subtleties and complexities are annoying to me, so I struggle to pin them down in my mind.
It’s not straight forward but I remember with Sarr we (fans) thought eh would be Hg and club trained just like Saliba as his circumstances were identical
But he didn’t get classed as Hg because he is a none EU person and doesn’t have the rights if employment in the same way. Not sure how he didn’t end up club trained. Maybe Saliba isn’t and I’m wrong

Good idea from Ange but do feel for him just before Christmas in a foreign country must be quite lonely, wonder if his family will be out there with him for it. Read that his family are going to be here at some point.

Been thinking and if this guy is genuinely class and stands out above everyone in training, it'll only be a matter of time of when he starts not if he starts. It's not like a Mikey Moore or Lankshear who haven't played competitive mens football, this guy has top tier South Korean so can pretty much start straight away imo. Maybe I'm just too optimistic

Gone quiet on this one hasnt it. Does he officially join us on the 1st Jan?
If so, play him against everyone. Dont care if he's not ready. He was ready to play against us in that friendly and ready to play the whole season in mens football, that's good enough for me. Thwow him to the lions/floor.

He has been training, at least in the gym at the training session.

I don't think he has been able to train with the team, but was at the game yesterday (sat with Moore) and will be available to play Vs Saudi Sportswashing Machine

Get him on the bench, nothing to lose really

we need to give yang a long runway to get used to the EPL pace and physicality - he has a good head on him and remains calm in tight situations so that's a plus. but he is rather lightweight and the epl players are not going to play nice.

Saliba was signed at 18 and managed to get 3 years in at Arsenal before he turned 21, which means he is classed as home grown. With Sarr, we signed the month before his 19th birthday, but loaned him back to his club meaning he did not actually transfer across to be on our books until just before his 20th birthday.

Since Brexit EU and non-EU players are treated the same. English clubs cannot register foreign players until they are 18, meaning 18 is the absolute oldest you can sign a foreign player and expect them to become home grown and club trained.

I've been trying to explain the rationale for the club signing a bunch of 18 year olds, because we are absolutely at the limit of home grown, club trained and locally trained lists and it really limits our flexibility in the transfer market for example.

Nah that’s not correct
There is a good article about it on Football London
We signed sarr at the right age but as a none EU national he doesn’t qualify
Your logic’s would make sense based on Saliba but it’s not how it worked
Saliba stayed on loan for 2 years the same as sarr and signed at the same age

Interesting one:

- a loan to a club outside of the FA's jurisdiction does not count towards the 3 year period
UNLESS
- The player's registration is held on suspension by the Premier League and FA
AND
- That player remains eligible to work in the United Kingdom throughout the period.

Saliba had right to work in the UK without a work permit up until 1st January 2021 when the transition period ended.

He was signed in Summer 2019. Which means only the first season loan qualified without a work permit. As he wasn't resident in the UK at the time I doubt he could have attained settled status as an EU citizen so I'm assuming Arsenal successfully obtained a UK work permit for the period covering the second loan after the Brexit transition period ended.

I guess what is done is done.

However, does this mean that if a PL club buys an EU national at 17/18 and loans them back to a European club, then they will never get a homegrown status? Thinking about Vuskovic who would now need to stay under the FA's jurisdiction of PL and EFL moving forward.

So you could never get a Saliba situation again?

A quirk
Not even something I think they planned for

Yes
Saliba is an odd ball because of the transition
