Anyone remember that Bale chap?

I think we are the ex Girlfriend that is jealous of his new super model.

Nah, it's just the blue balls talking, seeing as our new and lovely bird hasn't been fit for the sack yet. Next month we'll have forgotten all about that Bale chap... ;)

That's another cracker from Bale. **** hairdo though. Why on earth would he be wearing that hairband-thingy?? Only five year old girls can pull that off and still keep their dignity.

Ironically, isnt this thread doing some of that anyways? Hoping 'she' would come back some day etc etc etc

Yeah, I don't get it either. I can see why fans wanted players like Klinsmann or Ginola to return as they always said how much they loved it here and how they wanted to come back, but I don't get the idolising of players like Bale and Modric who have barely mentioned us since they left and probably couldn't care less.

People and emotion, you mention Klinsmann (and obviously from your name feel some connection), but really has there been a player who more obviously "used" the club? not once, but twice, regardless of words.

Modric to me always saw Spurs as a stepping stone (same as Berbatov), I suspect regardless of his lack of comments, Bale grew up at Spurs and must have some affection (supposedly he was part of the reason Davies signed for us) for his time here. He is however at a club that can win everything every year, and most of what I hear from him now is obviously party line sound bites e.g. **** about La Liga being exciting as example, what else is he going to say, 90% of our games is us rodergering ****ty small clubs 3-0, 5-0, 8-0 so myself, Ronaldo and others can create an impossible to repeat personal record year over year?

In Feb this year Modric said:

"I have great memories of Tottenham.

"I spent four great years there with a lot of emotions, with a lot of love from the club and the fans. I enjoyed every moment with Tottenham. But in one moment you feel you need to take a step forward, to go to a higher level.

"I think it was the right time for me to go, but I will always be thankful to Tottenham for everything they did for me. I became a better player there and they pushed me to this level where I am at the moment. I will always be a fan, I follow them a lot when I can."

As far as I can tell, a lot of what Bale and Modric have said about us post-Spurs has been positive: indeed, apparently it was on Bale's advice that Davies decided to commit to us. Something about Bale gushing over the treatment he received while he was here, our commitment to developing players, the good atmosphere, etecetera. Davies mentioned it somewhere earlier, I believe.

Both these players ultimately gained from their moves to Spurs, and we gained from having them here. They both gave us as much time as could really be hoped for: Bale gave us seven years, Modric four. In Modric's case, he knuckled down and gave us a great season after being denied a lucrative move with only the promise of a guaranteed move the next summer to sustain him through 2011-2012.

I'd like to think we've matured enough to accept that the most we can demand from players is that they stay for a reasonable time, and when they do want to leave, let the club negotiate without putting hurdles in the way of us receiving the highest fee we can. And I'd like to think that, after all the transfer sagas we've gone through in recent seasons, we as a fanbase are now reasonable enough to accept that holding on to a player when they really want to leave is impossible, and that the only thing we can logically do is make sure the parting happens on good terms, with a replacement secured and (hopefully) a bit of a profit made on the signing.

If we part with players on good terms, there's more of a chance that their regard for the club increases: if that happens, then we benefit in two ways. Firstly, players are then more likely to recommend the club as a potential destination to any other players we're targeting, should they be asked for their opinion, and secondly, they'd likely countenance moving back at some future point in their career should their move not work out or they get old, which would probably not be the case were they to leave on bad terms. Those benefits are worth a bit of flexibility over our desire to retain our players at any price, and I hope we've realised this as well.

Overall, we shouldn't be attached to our players too much: support them to the hilt, by all means, but don't be overly dismayed if/when they move on. Wish 'em well, and hope the club brings in someone of comparable or better quality. From the club's side if the players want to leave, I'd wager we've now mastered the art of eking another year or so out of them (via a new contract + Levy's 'verbal guarantees'), and our record of mostly having positive reviews from players upon their departure suggests that we've lived up to most of the promises we've made. So the club has definitely matured, and overall, I hope the fans have too.

A most excellent post, it's my personal viewpoint too. Love seeing Bale in full flow, we know where it all started in the top flight... I thought he could get to the level he is now even when he had his foot broken as a very young lad, and lost every home game when he played for years till Arry came along... a very weird stat

Even from that early period you could tell Bale was a player.

Granted, no-one could say he would go on to do what he did but the quality was there. I see the same kind if thing in Lamela; proven jack-all yet with us but you can just see pedigree from little touches and glimpses. I think he'll go on to be very, very successful with us.

Do you know hurts the most about Bale and Modric?

They never won a trophy with us. My stance on trophies being no. 1 priority isn't just down to being fed up with the top four obsession but also the slight sadness I feel knowing they never lifted anything with us, that there isn't a picture of the holy trinity holding the F.A Cup or Europa League together which when you think about it is a real shame because those three were exceptionally brilliant players worth telling your children and gran children about.

He's good, but...I really can't take him seriously with that ****ing travesty of a hair do. Did he lose a bet or something?
