Christian Eriksen

Well said, every time we fail to win games it seems some supporters want to slag off our better players, no one played well ( except Winks) our worse player ( imo) was Kane, ' but that is because he is NOT fit before anyone jumps on me.

People have already decided they want rid of Christian.

He was one of our better players on the night, certainly better than the front 3 and has had a much better season than Alli who doesn’t get half the heat - not saying he should btw.

I'm not sure about that. 2 dreadful seasons, 1 outstanding one. And he's now 30.

Was this season and his likely future contribution worth the fee + two year's wasted wages?

If anything it's a lesson that Poch shouldn't really sign players older than about 23

Writing off CE after 4/5 mixed months

Sissoko is our best player after 2 and half very average years and 6 months of good performances.

Makes no sense to me.

I don't think anyone is writing Eriksen off, but the fact of the matter is that there is problem in our team at the moment that is hindering the performances.
Personally I think we've never recovered from losing Wanyama, dier and Moose. That's putting strain and players in unfamiliar positions.

Quite a few have, just have a look on twitter....

I don't do twitter, or Facebook, instawhatsit or any other social media. Not good for my blood pressure or opinion of humanity.

a little taster of the more lucid ones

Can anyone really make a case for us keeping Eriksen now after the last six months of the season? Pls don’t throw stats at me. Stats make Hazard look average and the blokes a game changer. With the players we have around him Im sure someone could come in and do a better job now.

macarons on social media who would have thought. And i see the mods have been let out of school.

. Sissoko may not be as good as Dembele at breaking lines but he brings other strengths, for example covering our right back or getting back quickly to prevent a counter attack.
I disagree and so does the evidence:

Apologies for the thumb instead of a link, but the link kept messing up the selected years.

We absolutely have not changed our play to accommodate Sissoko.
I disagree, and so do those with access to all the data:

So the figures for Dier are based on a much smaller sample size during 15/16. In addition he is playing a different position to the other two Not sure what this proves?

That does not really disagree with what I said about Sissoko. He serves two purposes to get the ball directly from the back to up top through his running. He also covers Trippier and covers against counter attacks. He is not as good as Dembele with the ball.

The articles suggest we have lost midfield control because Dembele has not been the player he once was and we have not replaced him. We know that without the stats. Dembele was an amazing player I have said that many times.

My conclusion is that none of the remaining midfielders are good enough to give the press resistance of the Uber Dembele. Consequently we play much more directly. But this is not a problem that is only down to playing Sissoko. We have had issues with the form of Dier and Wanyama while Winks has been injured frequently. If anything Sissoko has got us out of what would have been an even bigger hole.

What this proves is what we know, we need to reinforce the midfield positions in front of the defence. It looks like, with the early links to Ndombele, we are trying to do that.

It shows that Sissoko's defensive output really isn't all that great at all. He doesn't shirk responsibility, but his output is low. See the left side of the graph below for his defensive output:

The figures that really concern me are pressures and pressure regains - no Poch midfielder should be low on those.

The other midfielders are still in the roles they were in when we did have Dembele. Sissoko is the player that had come into the team since we lost Dembele and Sissoko is the player that very well informed neutrals are telling us has deep enough deficiencies for us to change our entire tactics so as to not rely on his (lack of) ability in possession.

I read it as the problem is not Sissoko per se but an overall problem with our midfield not being press resistant since Dembele has deteriorated and not replaced. We will have to agree to disagree. Thanks for the stats though a very interesting read.
