I liked Erik Lamela before it was cool

He's a number 10, easily. And the best we have to play that position. I don't mind him playing on the right but centrally is his best position and him,Eriksen and Soldado should be starting every game. They are the only three players we have who are technically good.

Maybe there was something about the situation at Roma that allowed him to be better player. Other than the QPR game where the whole team looked impressive.. he has only shown the occasional glimpse of an exceptional player. But I have seen him fail to get past a lot of defenders, misplace passes, lose possession through a lack of physical presence. He has looked best when running with the ball into space from deeper -- unfortunately, unless you are deeper lying midfielder, you just don't get the opportunity much in the Premiership, and certainly not now that more teams are playing a pressing game higher up the pitch.

Messi was dog**** against Brazil, it was a nothing friendly. Lamela was getting games in Argenina last season before his injury when he could barely get in our team and if he wasn't injured would have been in the WC squad. he's viewed as a star out there on par with Higuain, di Maria and Aguero.

the situation at Roma was that he was confident and was settled with a manager that loved him. He has been at this club where a manager has loved him for 3 months, in a team thats gelling to a new philosophy in a league where he's had 10 starts. I've failed to see the best players fail to beat a defender. I've also seen Lamela beat a defender on a number of occasions, why not focus on that? I've also seen him play superb assisted passes, why not focus on that? He lacks as much physical presence as di Maria, but who cares, it's not their style, I've also seen him use "strength" to bust passed a player and hold off players, but we'll only focus on the times he's barged off the ball. Why must fans be cynical.

The physical presence thing keeps bemusing me too. I just don't get it. What about Mata and Silva? Or like you say, Di Maria. I just don't get what it is about Lamela that makes people focus on his supposed lack of strength, unless it's just a continuing comparison with Bale for whatever reason.

Lamela is clearly super talented and willing to work hard. Keep that going and good things happen imo.

I wonder if those who want us to give up on Lamela also want us to give up on Chadli at this point?

I've noticed he gets pushed off the ball too often, Eriksen does too. I don't know if they need to physically need to toughen or mentally, or both.

But I've also seen Lamela barge passed player and use strength plenty of times which obviously no one talks about, but when he gets outmuscled everyone makes a song and dance about it. Maybe it a balance thing.
 
Since when do you buy/value players based on the last handful of games? Just seems like a question designed to lay the boot in to another one of our players to me
 
We nearly gave up on Gareth but thankfully we didn't sell him and he developed beautifully.

This is technically his first season considering he got minimal playing time in the last one, Yes I do think he probably needs to do some upper & leg work in the gym, patience is what we need, I believe I have seen enough to tell me we could have a very special player here if we play our cards right.

Patience is the key with Eric, in the short term it might be an idea to use him as an impact sub so he can come on and change games, we need to get his confidence up. I just hope we realise that some players do require time and Eric has got plenty on his side.

Look at De Gea for Man Utd who now looks the part. Our very own Modric was mediocre for two years before blossoming. We have invested a lot of money but we need to also invest our time in Lamela. I would hate us to give up on him just because he is not giving us instant success.....you just know if we let him go for a loss that it will come back and make us look foolish!
 
You just know some people on here would deem Messi a failure that should be sold, if we bought him and he didn't score for us in four-five games. Instant gratification culture really is annoying, eh?

I, as others, am also disappointed by some of Lamela's games so far for us. I would have liked him to do better with his decision making, for instance. But I see signs of improvement and I see the qualities of a very good player in him. It would be foolish to give up on him already - if anyone, Spurs fans should know that keeping faith in young, talented, but underperforming players, really could pay off big time. He might not succeed for us, but to conclude on that now, is not the brightest thing to do.

Just to add to this (I clearly agree with you 100%).

It's not only that he's talented and improving. Some of the stuff coming out about him and from him in recent weeks and months has been really encouraging.

-He apparently was the fittest player at Roma, under Zeman. This is not something that comes for free for anyone, he clearly works hard at more than stepovers.

-He has been working really hard under Poch for the team, both pressing and getting back to defend. He's made a couple of mistakes, but he seems very reliable with his workrate.

-He keeps his head up and keeps trying despite things not going his way. He keeps wanting the ball and he keeps trusting himself to make something happen with it when he gets it.

All of this to me adds up to it being very likely that his attitude is very good. It was his attitude that took Bale from talented and hyped to a superstar. It was his attitude that took Modric from clearly super talented to dominating CL games for Real Madrid. I can't know for sure if Lamela's attitude is as good as what Bale and Modric had, but he's at least on the right end of the spectrum for attitude I think. That combined with his obvious talent is not an easy combination to find imo. Getting rid would be ****ing ridiculous imo. Had he half-arsed it Ade style, acted up like Taarabt did and does, shown up unfit like Ben Arfa I would have gotten the idea of wanting to get rid. As is, no way. We need more players like him, not less.
 
Good post braineclipse and robbo. All he needs is a bit if a mean streak, he wants to be lived and a nice guy. That will hamper him fulfilling his real potential.

I really like Lamela so I am tempted to agree with every word... and he is still a baby... but clearly against City his head dropped and he wasn't confident enough so I'm not entirely sure about your third bullet point
