He was very good his first season. Then again, we come off a very successful season and had a new ambitious manager with one of the best players in the world in our team.
Then we sell our best player, bring in second rate, continue to play jan out of position when he was signed to play centre back.
Alot of broken promises within the last year surrounding signings and the selling of Bale, but I bet one of those was vert playing left back.

Bit of a myth really. Had a few good runs down the left and scored a couple of goals early on, but defensively he was just as bad then as now.

I can see where you are coming from but...
1. Most of his games in the first season were at left back and as you say, he looked excellent there.
2. It still does not explain schoolboy errors that have plagued his game in the last two seasons.

Not sure it's as true as it was but he certainly called it right with this guy. Goons wanted him but Wenger wanted to convert him to a midfielder.
Jan thinks he's a CB and isn't interested in anything else. He's a great footballer, good feet, decent tackler, ok pace, good passer.
As a defender? Honestly he's pretty lazy, loses concentration too easily, gets the hump and loses focus when the games going against him. And he's poor in the air both in reading the flight of the ball and also in the physical challenge.
Think his attitude is pretty questionable at best and at worst I get a worrying impression he's a negative person to have around whrn the going ain't great bringing those Around him down. The guy in your team in the office that's been there years but constantly moans about how **** the company and his job is.
Honestly couldn't give a toss if this guy goes he hasn't had a good game for almost 2 years now

I don't think we want to be selling Verts just yet .... This is the player who turned down CL football with Arseanal. He chose us because he wanted to play games in his favoured position in central defence but due to the mismanagement of the squad, found himself playing left-back .
He's is our best defender but granted, his form is not what it should be and his demeanor at times has been poor. But it has to be said, that the club has let him down, Sherwood in particular.

I think Vertonghen is a top class defender. But his performance has gone done recently after being paired with error-prone players like Dawson, Kaboul and Chiriches. We will be doing a big mistake if we let him go. We should buy a quality defender to partner him in defence.
Hmmm maybe the problem is Vertonghen? Or at least it can't be blamed on everyone else. He managed to win PFA team of the year playing with Dawson. Chiriches and Dawson formed a decent partnership at the start of the next season and IMO it was Vertonghens return where our defending went downhill.

Yep lets blame everyone else and not point any of the blame in Vertonghens direction. "Top class" defenders put in good performances regardless of who they are playing next to. Ledley King is a prime example and i'm afraid Verts is no where near that class and never will be.

No he wasn't - he hardly ever played at left back in his first season.
Last year we had either him or naughton to play there so he filled in for about 10 games - all this stuff about him sulking at being left back is a joke because if true, it was temporary measure as we had no one else. Everytime we have had a relatively injury free squad he has played centre half 99% of the time

Begs the question why Daws didn't have the same negative effect on King. Whereas it's generally acknowledged the opposite was the case.
