Jobs

The problem for the younger generation is that many do not try hard enough. Applying online like most youngsters is setting yourself up for faliure. People need to actually get out there and hand out CV's by hand to potential employers or ring up companies. In my opinion this younger generation have a confidence issue (example prefering to text or go online rather than speak to someone).

Er. You know that quite a lot of companies now will only accept applications online right?

That's the system these days. It's nothing to do with the choices 'most youngsters' make.

It saves time and effort for the company. Which in turn saves them money.

Er. You do know some companies are constantly on the lookout for potential employees and do not advertise every job going on websites, right?

When I graduated I looked up companies and rang them asking for opportunities rather than 'wait' for a job to come to me on an job site.

This not only shows the company drive and determination it also reduces your competition and saves the company money by not having to pay fees to a third party.

This is how I secured my job. This is how 2 of my close mates from uni secured their jobs.

I also have a friend who moved to the UK from Italy 2 years ago. On her first day she found a job by going round to all her local restaurants and speaking to them. That's something a lot of people don't bother doing these days as it's 'easier' to apply online. Similar concept to that TV program a while back, 'the fairy job mother', people need to actually get out there with drive and determination.

When i graduated i looked up companies and rang them and i was told by around 80% of those companies a website or an e-mail address to send my CV to. They point blank refused to talk to me, because they were inundated with candidates and had a wealth of CV's to look through via their online services.

The world is changing. You may not like it, but it is.

Well considering I did this 17 months ago I will disagree with you.

Applying online to an advertised job is different to seeking a non advertised job opportunity then being told to apply online or via email.

Also I have no symthaphy for grads who took on degrees for the university life or because they liked the subject without any considering for job prospects.

That is half the reason graduates find it hard getting work. Sociology or Art are dieing trades in this country while engineering or technology are in high demand and will be for decades.

I had 4 close mates at uni all who found work within 6 months of graduating in the sector they studied for. I have two cousins, one who did graphic design 2 years ago and one who did Art, one's working in Asda while the other is working for Next.

Supply and demand. People won't like hearing that but that's the truth.

tickle my balls with a feather

Fella who bets in my shop is unemployed. Told me yesterday he has MS. He is currently doing the knowledge but is 2/3 years away from completing it he said. He came in yesterday and was really tinkled off so I asked him what was up. He told me he had been told that he must apply for work as he had been told he is fit to work.

He wanted to sign on and do fudge all for 2/3 years until he passes the knowledge!! Scumbag IMO as he is in the bookies every day betting and shows no obvious signs of being unable to work.

Graphic design is a legit degree. Art not so much, but my sister is a Graphic Designer and she earns a lot freelance and has never struggled for a job. Look around you, everything you see has been produced by a graphic designer. Literally everything.

No doubt Richie but it's all about finding that first few steps into the industry. I have an uncle who is a graphic designer, he does very well and even with his contacts and all he could get my cousin was 6 months of unpaid experience which he has taken and completed.

Work is currently slow and has been for years unless you are in one of the market leading companies.

I hear much of the work is being sent abroad, especially in other countries within the EU.

Anyone ever left a job or had to hand in their notice and has this nerve wrecking sadness about leaving?

Three weeks ago I was contacted by a company for a position they had vacant. They invited me for a brief chat over coffee etc. I was offered the job and a remuneration package that beats my current one by about 46% plus all sorts of benefits. It has taken me two weeks to decide and have racked my brains out. I have decided to leave and handed in notice. Needless to say my Director was shocked but understood although the timing couldnt be worse as I was recently promoted to Manager.

However I am so ****ing sad, literally in tears haha about leaving. Its like the end of an era, I have been working with them for six years so its like a second family or a marriage etc.

Not sure why, whilst im excited about the new roe, im saddened so saddened to leave my current role. I do have three months ****ing notice though haha.

I am in a similar position, been here 6 years and looking at options but when it comes to accepting interviews I seem to get cold feet even though I got done over for promotion and still get flogged to the bone working all hours.

What is the job?

Wow i have been waiting years for someone to talk common sense on here, well done. I also feel some of the problem is how a previous government tried to push ever more people to go to University even though it was not needed for the country, they should bring back more skilled base course and colleges. I imagine some on here will consider that racist though or something like that.

Im in Practice innit - but now im moving to Industry and Commerce - this massive American Communications Company as Head of Audit. Gonna be interesting but gonna be ****ing good at it haha.

I guess its a step into the unknown that scares you - taking you out of your comfort zone. I wwould say do it PD. I can have you come work for me under my wing ;)

If the robber barons keep putting up the pension age forcing people to stay in work longer there will be less jobs for the young

So people in there 20's and 30's should be able to retire at the same age as the current oldies despite the age people are living to is increasing. Im no tory but it is the lack of financial sense that some show when they try to attack anything they do that really troubles me.

The reasons behind raising the pension age are sound and should have been addressed as far back as when the tories were in on their own in the 90's i understand why no government has had the guts to do it because it is not a vote winner but it is something that has been needed to be done for a long time. The average age someone receives their pension will remain the same.

I feel sorry for people in physical jobs and even low skilled ones like shop staff, i can not see how a 70 year old woman can do shifts standing on her feet all day. I got out of the building trade because of a worry over future health concerns i imagine many more will do the same over the next 30 years.

Can not for the life of me understand how anyone can complain about the raising of the pension age, i say this with the hope that the Politicians can not receive their pensions till the same time as the rest of us.

I would've thought this would have its greatest affect on the poorer end of society, and women in particular. So you've probably answered your own question there Chich.

I've rather accepted that I'll get jack **** from the government, not that my private pension is up to much judging by my yearly projections.

Nah mine not up to much either, i will run this business for another 18 months and not just to claim back the VAT ;):-k:lol: **** this country and the communists that run it.

My fathers pension was the worse was due for £19,000 a year when his projections came out in 95 but by 2000 it was down to £9,800 something happened but i can not say on here or i think certain posters will accuse me of racism.

BROWN BROWN.

anyway the tories have done something that will be unpopular but is for the good of the country, not that i will vote for them ever again because of their EU policies.

Back on topic, anyone looking for a job maybe the best bet these days is through agencies and internet and stuff. But if you want to better yourself what harm can it do to pound the pavement and go out there, even if you do not get a job you will feel better in yourself.

Know exactly what you mean. I'm starting a new job in January. You have to prove yourself at the new company so it's almost like you're starting from the beginning and it takes months/years to gain the level of respect at your new company. Obviously you've built up goodwill if you've been at a certain company for x amount of time.
