Mauricio Pochettino - Sacked

Do we really have the third best team in the league on paper? We indeed have some very good players and the third best squad in the league with good depth in certain positions, but we currently have some very weak components in our team - i.e. real trouble at right back, no (fit) player who can hold the midfield and a gradual decline at left back. Put a peak Michael Carrick into this Spurs team at the base of the diamond and we would probably be looking fantastic (even with our right back problems) but unfortunately peak Michael Carrick type players would be highly coveted and very, VERY expensive.

Outside of City and Liverpool who has a better squad than us? Chelsea at full strength are the closest but they are going through a transition to youth that if they see through will see them take a step back to take two forward, United are no better than West Ham or Everton, and Arsenal have Aubamayeng who I hate saying it is world class Lacazzete is good and Pepe the jury is still out, Ceballos is good but only on loan and the rest of their squad is Utd, West Ham, Everton levels of average, Leicester are a dark horse that with Chelsea Utd and Arsenal’s issues could steal fourth, so yes we do have the third and at absolute worst fourth best squad, we should be finishing in the top 4 by a canter on paper at the very least, a lot of our fans really do underestimate our squad playing off how much we are overachieving, yes we are from a financial perspective but not from a actual squad perspective where we are very much on par.

A bit embarrassing that you've used a headline from The Sun to make a point. I'd have thought you feel a bit dirty now?! The actual quotes don't represent 'clear the air' talks at all:

“It was calm and no tea cups were thrown. The gaffer said he was happy with the first 45 minutes — and wanted us to remember that going forward.

“Of course he wasn’t happy with conceding three goals in the last seven minutes.

“But he clearly thinks it was a freak result and doesn’t want us to dwell on it too much.”
I didn't use either, I used a post from someone one here!

You're attributing far too much effort to me if you think I'd go as far as the headline.

I really think we do. Right back is an issue but managers can find a stop gap with one position. Chelsea won the league with Victor Moses! We have spent on central midfielders and in time I’m sure they will prove their worth.

After 7 at home … actually yes, I remember AVB conceding 5?

That was in mid December, much further into the season. This is 1st day in October and with all the current issues we still:

- are touching distance from top 4
- could still finish 2nd comfortably in CL if we win our next 3 games (of course only if we pull our socks up!)

In any case, who would Levy get to step in? It's one thing if Poch walked, a totally different thing for Levy if he actually sacks him...

Is it my imagination, or did I hear him say in a recent presser that it was still "up to the club to design a new project"? If I didn't dream that up, what exactly were all these "many things" he spoke about with Levy the other week? Personally, I think he realised after the CL final that that was his shot with this squad, and they basically didn't show up for him. He's trying to present a brave face, but he's still in the dumps about that and sulking in my opinion. I suspect that inside he's lost faith in them, and a few of them have picked that up. I doubt the latter part of the second half Tuesday will have done a lot to restore it.

I think you are closer to the truth than most.
There's a disconnect between poch and some of the players because either he realises they aren't good enough, past their best or want to move on.
But he is stuck with them.
Out of last season's squad at the moment i'd say only Kane, son, Moura, Jan maybe Hugo and possibly Dele are of the level he wants.

Big question mark over dier because of his apparent fitness issues. Same with lamela.
Eriksen wants to move.

That's just not good enough to keep overachieving the way they have been.

If all if this really is the result of him having an almighty sulk, is he even a man you want running your team?

I mean, think about it, what does it say of him that he will literally brick all over our season because he is pouting? Completely give up on his job so he can stamp his feet?

Now I am forced to make excuses for him, which trust me I really don’t want to...but...

...since the season began...
Sessegnon, Foyth, LoCelso, Ndombele, KWP and Dele all lost to injury for varying amounts of significant time.
Davies not 400%
Dier not 400%

He has not had the players fit to figure it out.
Add the general flimflam and indecision of Eriksen into the mix, and none of this is a massive surprise.

Far too much sense and truth in that for some Steff, burn him at the stake is needed.

I don't believe he's sulking, in my opinion he is struggling to get the best out of a squad that is in decline.
Some of that decline is his fault of course, but we've all said this squad is overachieving, well that's caught up with us big time.

Before the season even begins might be a little premature mate!

This was 2 weeks before the season started - there was more sniping before that.

Mauricio Pochettino: Tottenham boss 'not in charge' of transfers. Mauricio Pochettino says he is "not in charge" of transfers at Tottenham and believes his job title should be changed from manager to coach.

I dont think he is sulking either, but its a persistent theme on here - so Im making the logical conclusion if it were to be accepted as true.

I also dont think the squad is in decline. In need of refreshing, sure. And in need of clearing some out, sure. But decline? Not for me.

There is much better football in this group of players than we are seeing this season.

If I had to pin my colours to any particular theory, it would be that Poch is burned out. Simply over cooked, frazzled, in need of a break.

I think his drop in performance, mixed messages, odd decisions etc - all speak to someone trying to do their best but simply not having it in them.

Thats speculation, of course, but from where I sit he is absolutely failing to do basic things - things we know he is more than capable of - and this is the only way it makes sense to me.

Sorry, Glasgow - thats a cop-out.
This group got to the Champions League Final for goodness sake and finished third in the league and has had £100m + pumped into it and now its in decline?

Such an important time for the club, and as we all sit in that wonderful stadium and enjoy the superb facilities, time to remember who helped make it and why he deserves our patience...

He deserves patience all the time there are signs of life, patience for the sake of it isnt actually productive for anyone

I think Poch has accepted that some of our players are not up to the standards they have played at previously, Toby's legs appear to have gone and he is getting caught out of position far more then he used to be. Rose is just not up to it anymore and seeing as we have been unable to sell him on ( despite him making noises about want to go elsewhere for at least a year) i am not really surprised that there seems to have been very little interest in him from other clubs.

He has been forced to play a player ( Winks) at the base of midfield because of the problems Dier has suffered over the last several months. Winks is not good enough to play there and ( imo) his game has suffered and he has become a target for some fans. Dele has not looked the player he was a season or two back and when he has played looked a shadow of his old self ( the big question is can he recover his form and i am sure that is a concern for Poch.

The RB position is a major concern, Foyth getting injured was a blow and Aurier seems to have made a mess of trying to make that job his own. Now we also have injurys to our new signings and although Ndembele looks the dogs gonads he still needs time to adjust his game here.

Can he turn it round? well i still believe he can and i would be amazed if he is not here at the end of the season but who knows.
