Man jailed for racially abusing Rashford, Sancho and Saka after Euro 2020 final

A man who livestreamed himself on Facebook racially abusing three England football players after the Euro 2020 final has been jailed.

Jonathon Best, 52, posted a rant about Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho and Bukayo Saka, who missed penalties in the shootout against Italy which England lost, the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) said.
On Tuesday Best was sentenced to 10 weeks in prison at Willesden magistrates court. He had previously pleaded guilty to sending by public communication network a grossly offensive or indecent or obscene or menacing message or matter.

The CPS said the court heard Best, a forklift driver of Feltham, west London, was caught out after a colleague and Facebook friend reported the 18-second clip to Facebook and the police after he refused to take it down. Facebook took the clip down three days later.

Elaine Cousins, from the CPS, said: “Jonathon Best took to Facebook to livestream a barrage of racist abuse at the three players who missed penalties during the game. He used social media to publicly vilify these three young men who tried to score for England. When approached by a Facebook friend asking him to remove the grossly offensive content, Best replied: ‘It’s my profile, I can do what I want.’

“There is absolutely no room in the game, nor elsewhere, for racism. The CPS is committed to bringing perpetrators of hate crime to justice where there is the evidence to do so.”
She added: “I would like to thank the individual who reported this appalling hate crime and I hope this prosecution goes some way in educating and deterring people from posting hate on social media.”

After the case the CPS announced it was working with the police, player bodies and organisations to explain what evidence is needed to pass its legal tests to authorise charges in hate crime cases.

The way the press have negatively promoted saka after the Iceland game is quite grim. It certainly looks like they are targeting him and it does to me at least feel like a racist focus

I saw that mentioned on talksport. I don't read newspapers anymore. Was it all of them that had his picture on the back or a couple or what?

Edit - looked it up it was the sun and the star. Not what i'd call the press. Be happy if both went out of business.
 
Tbf 8 players that played against iceland were black/mixed race (a few were substitutes). So the odds were that a black/mixed race player would have his pic at the end of the game were quite high.

That’s a fair observation but it’s also an issue of optics.
I winced when I saw the “Black Ice” headline above a picture of Saka. Yes I get the “Ice” as in Iceland and the “Black Ice” as in a ‘slip’ up for England (to cite one of the examples).
But given the abuse Saka got after the last Euros you’d think some picture editor or other editor would be aware of the undertones of the headline, whether intentional or not.
Some people will say it shouldn’t matter, he is being depicted as a member of the England team and no other reason, but there’s still enough racism around to justify a level of sensitivity in how non-white players are portrayed.
(Not suggesting you disagree with any of that).

Black ice is bang out of order. I only knew about a picture.

That headline is stomach turning. I’m stunned that any professional in the media okayed that.

TBH when I heard about the story initially, I was sort of indifferent towards it and thought it was people trying to find something that wasn’t there. But, as I understand it, 5-6 papers all featured a pic of Saka after the defeat. That’s an unbelievable coincidence especially as he was on the field for such a short period of time. All things being equal, the odds of that happening are astronomical which hints at an institutional problem in the media IMO.
 
Or that Saka is currently one of the biggest stars/names of the England team, therefore more likely to be used - usually see his mug plastered across the backpages whenever International break is on

But he barely played in that match and only came on late as a sub. It was a weird selection of player to use for the pic criticising the performance unless they were purposely trying to use a rather tacky headline...
