I have a hypothesis on Maddison. He has often talked about his family and how much it means to him, how much he misses them when he’s away etc. I’m sure he is entirely dedicated as a professional - all at this level have to be as they wouldn’t get to where they are - but at the final %s, he is lacking, perhaps mentally, more than anything. He seems football as a job primarily and his family are everything to him.
I’m probably not articulating this v well, but ultimately he’s of the view that he’s not at the very, very highest echelons of the game, and therefore maybe subconsciously he allows himself to be ‘distracted’ by family matters. Just a thought.
Possibly a dialectic at play here I can’t reconcile i.e. you can play at the highest level AND be a dedicated family man.
