Victor Wanyama

I think he might start against Huddersfield, but it might be Winks who gets a rest. Poch won't want to give Winks too many starts close together at the moment imo, he is still finding his way back after injury. We can cope without him v Huddersfield, then bring him back for 2nd leg v City.

The game we were holding midfield until he got subbed.... then we started losing midfield and poch has to react to his error

Can be seen many ways and I know you don’t rate Wanyama

Wanyama was fantastic in 16/17 season. But we all know he's perma-crocked now

Didn’t look it vs arsenal and didn’t look it last night

I think it’s easy for to fans to assume things about players fitness without knowing the facts

I thought he was very good against Arsenal, funny that people say Sissoko was covering him because I saw it the other way around. Sissoko was running about like a headless chicken and Wanyama was doing all the smart graft covering the spaces etc.

In fairness to GB, while I wont write off Wanyama like he has, it is hard to see the big man coming back to his full force given his record the last couple of years. Experience tells us when players go through these spells it usually means a decline rather than resurrection.

I live in hope though!

Winks quarter-backing the midfield, sitting deep in the middle, with Wanyama and Sissoko rampaging on either side of him would be an interesting proposition. Dele playing the false 9 in Kane's absence, Son and Moura either side of him.

No Eriksen? But I like where you are coming from.

Perhaps I'm thinking more of the post-Eriksen era, I don't know really. Part of me also thinks we might need a tactical surprise to beat them in the 2nd leg, as I'm sure the likes of Mendy, De Bruyne and B.Silva will all start, which makes things very different. We might need to play more in the Klopp style against that, create chaos for Son and Moura to exploit.

Winks has been out for a bit so I can see him getting 60 minutes, like on Tuesday, to keep building up his match fitness. Sissoko is a beast and Wanyama's also back from a long time out. So I see Poch starting Winkssoko (Siswinkso?) against Huddersfield and replacing Winks with Wanyama in the second half, again.

There'd be some complication if Dier is fit again, as that would allow us to play our trusty fluid 4-4-2 / 3-5-2 (ish). But would you want to break up what's becoming a very effective partnership?

Mendy's coming back from a long time out and seemed to be out of favour anyway -- will Zinchenko have recovered by next Wednesday? It'll be interesting to see who plays for Emirates Marketing Project this weekend.

De Bruyne and B. Silva would definitely be an upgrade, but for whom? I think they set up like this on Tuesday:

.......................Ederson
Walker...Otamendi...Laporte...Delph
...................Fernandinho
.....Gundogan.....Silva.......Mahrez
..................................Sterling
..................Aguero

Of the attacking five, Sterling and Aguero have to be definites -- unless the latter isn't fit enough to play. He certainly wasn't his usual dazzling self against us. De Bruyne and B. Silva for Gundogan and D. Silva?

I'm not sure how we should surprise them. We're already forced into a quite different game plan with Moura (presumably) replacing Kane. I like the idea of Dele as a false 9 with Sonny and Moura running from wider -- more like inside forwards than wingers. Or Son is more than capable of playing up front, in which case Dele and Moura play as AMs behind him.

Maybe I’m the odd one here but when I’ve seen Aguero this season he has excelled against the mediocrity and struggled against the better sides

He hasn’t played better in the past IMO and had less credit for it

Their issue is that Jesus is still no where near as good currently

My guess at City's team (they have so many players, I doubt I'm right, but here goes):

----------------ederson
walker---otamendi---laporte---mendy
---------------fernandinho
----------KDB---------------d.silva
-----b.silva------aguerro--------sterling

I think they will be much more attacking at home and look to pile the pressure on early. It will be very tough.

Like a few others it felt like I was seeing the old Wanyama again; even if it was a brief cameo there was much more confidence in what he was doing.

Let's hope he can string together some performances towards the end of the season, a player like big Vic could really make a difference for the Emirates Marketing Project away game. Only the fitness team will know but I hope he's ready to start on the weekend, get a good 60/70 minutes in his legs. You'd imagine that'd mean one of Winks / Siss getting a bit of a rest and Wanyama would be a genuine option off the bench for the away leg the following week.

Thought he was very good in Tuesday's cameo.

Would be amazing if he got back to his 16/17 self. Would be very happy for him too.

If he does, and Sissoko sustains this form permanently, would we even need a new CM this summer (other than for the purpose of freshening things up)?

Staying fit until the end of the season and then having a full pre-season would be a real boost. It'd make our summer a lot easier.

Yes. We have an imbalance in CM. We have:
- 3 defensive/destructive players: two out and out DMs through Dier and Wanyama, plus Sissoko who is a physical presence/wrecker/work-horse...but none of those offer creativity anything close to that expected for a creative top 4 CM
- only one CM who can pass the ball in Winks given that we haven't replaced Dembele

My priorities for the summer window are:
- creative CM
- 1 or 2 attackers of some description
- in an ideal world, a decent RB like Wan Bissaka

I don't agree with your categorisations of these players' strengths. Dembele wasn't a passer. After shooting, it was probably the weakest area of his game. Dembele's strength was as a transition player, who broke through lines by running with the ball and using his strength to shield it. That is exactly the role that Sissoko has played this season. Wanyama can do that too, as we saw today.

Dier is a decent passer and much more than a destroyer/work horse. Winks is tenacious and covers well.

All of them have been top four quality central midfielders over the last few seasons.

I would agree though that we need to bring in an additional cover here over the summer, although that could be addressed if Alli or Eriksen dropped back there and we signed an attacking player instead.
