Welcome Ange: To Dare is to Didgeridoo

Putting rotation to the side, which I think we all agree was the right thing to do, I've still not seen any theories explaining the different tactical setups, and the reason for them.
If we're setting up one way cause we think we can win the competition, what are we doing in the league? He said himself he thought we could win it, so he's approached it to win. Why were we not approaching league games tactically to win them?

Still doesn't sit right with me.

Just coincidence our first choice back 5 haven't played together in the league since the start of December of course....

No it's not and I've already said we were prioritising, but it's also true what I said regarding the league teams being similar to the cup teams around the time we played AZ so...

Injuries meant we were in a league position where we couldn't get relegated, and couldn't get Europe qualification. We also couldn't risk more injuries in the league.

You sure that wasn't down to injuries? Who did we drop for those games? Sorry, haven't checked, but it sounds like you've looked into it?

I looked in to it a while back, so not got details fresh in the mind. Livescore app is quick way to check line ups if you have the time

Not just here to plug my website at every opportunity but I built a way to compare lineups from one match to any other in a season:

Without knowing the injury situation, that looks like we rested VdV, Maddison and Son in the league? Think Bentancur was suspended in Europe?

I think Ange’s laser focus on the Europa League led to standards slipping. I believe the fear of losing in the league was lost. “We’re safe, everything is about the Europa League” gives the players an out. It means they can drop 10% and not really need to worry and when you do that in the Premier League, you are absolutely going to be punished.

I think it’s massively down to this, we basically lost our edge in the league, dropped a few % in effort and focus, that along with the second string teams due to injury and or rotation since October/November time account for the league performances and results.

Can’t see that being allowed next season and if it does head that way then Ange won’t be here.

Again, that doesn't explain the tactics and game management from the manager.

The truth is no one really knows except Ange. All I can really think of is this;

I would imagine that changing tactics for the latter stages of the Europa was a tough call for him to make as it goes against all his stated principles and in doing so was basically an admission that his plan A "it's who we are" tactic just doesn't work against decent teams (a few outlier games excepted). So he changed it for Frankfurt, got the result and stuck with it.

Why didn't he do it in the league then?
Maybe he thought it wouldn't work in the PL against better teams with better players who would have likely found it easier to breakdown than Bodo or United. I dont think it would have changed the results, especially with the rotations he made in the last 5 or 6 league games.

Also, he may have thought, rightly so, that the fans would accept the pragmatism and lack of attacking intent with the carrot of a very winnable trophy at the end of it in the EL. But seeing it every week in the PL and still losing would have lead to even more criticism and dismay.

That's all I got, but I'm probably just tinkling in the wind.
