American politics

The White House has turned into Mickey Mouse summer camp, wearing hats in the oval office. Kids getting free reign and who is that blonde bi1tch who chairs the press conferences and just spouts utter utter gonads? She is honestly one of the most dislikable person I've ever heard talk.

Whatever happened to that woman who was Trumps spokesperson when he first got in last time? I can't even remember her name, wonder what she does now?

Edit: Sarah Sanders, Now the Governor of Arkansas apparently

I agree. The information space is the front line in the war for votes and the dems have comprehensively lost this war over many election cycles. Until they can compellingly counteract the lies and disinfo the casual voters will be uninformed and go with vibes. And the right is so good at controlling the narrative, even now, in MSM it is hard to see a break in this cycle. The left needs its own comparable media apparatus to motivate its voters. That's where the donor money should be spent.

What is happening now in the US is a rolling back of decades of progress. And the cuts to programs they enact will more often hit a red state worse. And this fact makes no inroads into a huge swathe of the electorate. They so badly need to correct this and hopefully stuff like MeidasTouch is the start of this.
As @thfcsteff says, it's 2/3 years too late.

That's when the election cycle was, the period to stop this from happening. Now it's happened (a Trump win) the media can be whatever (and of course Trump et al have got a massive headstart in its usefulness) as I don't believe any future democratic election is on Trumps radar ('its the last time you'll have to vote')

Trying to follow events from afar (and thanks for the info and links in this and the Putin/Russia thread - very informative). And the whole thing scares the life out of me.
There has to be some resistance, from somewhere. There has to be a way to placate Trump’s ego whilst steering him away from this path. Although of course it’s clear there are others doing the steering. The rest of the world need to wake up, but so do Americans.

The thing is, none of this should actually be a surprise. The USA has always been been a bit bat brick - they just made a load of money from being a physically large and young country with lots of natural resources and gold etc, and the good timings of the two major global wars that meant they could benefit from loans for a century.

There is the notion from the 20th century that humans can live together nicely and peacefully and respectfully. But we never have. It was just less in the 20th century because of social mobility, technology and war fatigue.

Yeh but its exposing just how much of a cult culture there is there (we are getting on here too). I have a friend who travelled across America for work and he once said how intrenched in their own views they are, its usually a lazy rhetoric but the whole not knowing what happens outside the 4 walls of their state, let alone country makes them insular in thought OR at least contributes to it.

You would like to think him peddling loads of distractions because he can't actually deliver on the hard promises would make a dent, but it seems they are fully mentally onside with his craziness.

I saw a post on twitter about a guy who talks about how is sister is fully gone in the head over Trump, she won't have anything bad about him and won't accept the fact surrounding his fiction, it actually made sad reading TBH

Russia and the USA are so similar in so many ways. Sort of a "same, but different".

I've always been fascinated by at what does a country become too big (physical size population as single and connected metrics) to be able to operate coherently and have central governance.

It is 15-20 years too late. Revocation of the fairness doctrine and the introduction of citizens united is when the cancer took hold. X and the podbros is just the cherry on the pile of brick that constitutes right-wing media.

But you have to start somewhere, and this is a small step in the right direction. The tide of opinion has begun to turn against the administration already as a result of DOGE cuts. Dems need to ride this wave of resentment and milk it for all it is worth. Will they? Probably not as those in charge don't seem up to it. The current dem leadership is best described as an anachronism. Raskin, AOC, Newsome, Warren, Murphy, Pritzker. These are made of stronger stuff and should be in leadership positions.

Incidentally I think you are right about the elections - there will be no fair ones going forward. I'm convinced there was fudgery in the last one too.

It's no coincidence that what we are seeing (in all it's guises) is concurrent with the greatest form of communication 'equipment/channels' that the human race never knew it needed. Mix in more than a little distress (for the masses) of the capitalist system and the door is open for persuasion, brain hacking and mindless behavior.

I'm hoping there are plenty still in the middle, and even people that lean to the right (inc trump voters) that still have the ability to think for themselves, recognize madness and simply have a sense of what's right or wrong.

No argument on that. Social media is a mind fudge, and one side is better at using it. I guess my point is that for the US in particular social media in the last few years is just the coup de grâce on a long-running strategy. To convince 30% or so of the population to vote against their best interests for decades takes a well-oiled propaganda machine, and that is what the right has. There is no equivalent on the left.

I fear it is too late for this cycle.

Indeed, but the finite point I was making is that up to 2022 there was still a huge chance to develop a presence in social media politics and the language/platforms that trump had opened up...yet once again, they blew it!
