Politics, politics, politics (so long and thanks for all the fish)

My German father in law is an immigrant, been here since 1960. He is super-racist and always moaning about immigrants. He regularly shares memes about boats swarming our shores. Forking idiot.

Have it in my family too, yet not one of my great grandparents were born in England :tearsofjoy:

Im not convinced by Nandy getting culture (which was a last minute substitution). But Starmer likes Orange Juice, Wedding Present and Aztec Camera, so I'll maybe trust him on that one.

Nandy is better than anyone from the other side of the divide so it is a win

I mean just look at Suella Braverman.

People who should know full well what it's like to be an unwelcome outsider sometimes fight more to make others feel unwelcome and on the outsides.

Perhaps it's a subconsicous way of making themselves feel more integrated.

Where is Scara?

I imagine far as his tax files are concerned he’s stashed away in the Cayman Islands alongside his money?

Mascaraing as GutterBoy no?

After 15 years working my socks off my businesses are at last making money - just as corporate tax goes up 19 to 25%, but I voted Labour. My timing is off, I missed the low tax era 😭

Starmer is a centrist though. He represents all people. So should find a balance. I think people are excited and pleased to have someone with base competence and decency. How he handles the many demands on public finances and whether Labour can innovate will be key to how he fairs in his first term. I think he could deliver two terms and it would probably take a decade to make an impact and rebuild. Baby steps.

Why was Jess Phillips being heckled the other day during the election result? I couldn’t make it what they were saying or why they weren’t happy with her.

It was Palestine stuff. Even though contradictarally she is quite a strong supporter of them (quit her shadow cabinet job to vote with the SNP ceasefire amendment). Just Galloways lot brick stirring then i think

Can you treble the height of London with a mass skyscrapper building programme, or turn the Cotswolds into a new Greater Manchester, in a climate crisis though?
there are thousands of derelict house and apartments across the UK, thousands more that sit empty as second and third homes or owned to rent which people can no longer afford

it's lack of government investment into services such as health and education that have brought the capacity down, the privatisation of utility providers that allowed them to chase profits rather than keep their infrastructure reliable and adequate, the asset stripping process has to stop and be reversed

we don't have an immigration problem, we have an attitude problem

Population is increasing about 5-6m a decade at current rate. A near 10% increase every decade. That's an awful lot of new building needed to keep pace with that.

A agree about services and privatisation

A lot of repaired and repurposed ones, how much space is taken up with factories and office blocks that will cease to be used do due to automation and remote working.

The population rate will slow in time.

I think there is a big opportunity (and rethink) in this area, along with disused hight street space and innovation in factory built micro apartments etc.

Traditional house building is brick and boring as fudge (generalisation, I know) and in the main still too expensive for the average person.

the state of Starmers first cabinet, every single one of them is a competent adult with knowledge of their remit

that's not how it's done

Really, I'm sure they're decent people but do many of them have experience in their areas? I looked up Bridget Phillipson. She went to Oxford so I don't think she's stupid then spent 2 years working local governement and 2 years at a non education charity so what gives her the experience to be education secretary? Or what does Peter Kyle know about science, technology and innovation? His background has mostly been working in charities I believe.

Being competent and hard working should be the bare minimum, amazing how low things have been the last few years.

I despair when I read or hear about politicians lack of charisma or personality, do people think it's a TV reality show? It's about how competent and responsible the individual is not if they make you laugh. I've worked we plenty of people who have done great work but couldn't perform on Britains got talent.

How about pods, like those Easy Jet hotels?

Some interesting non MP appointments into ministerial roles. Bringing expertise in from outside?
The Timpsons guy has always seemed a really impressive person. Someone that genuinely cares and acts on his beliefs.

And with the law one, well anything that means sneering champagne socialist Emily Thornbury gets passed over is a good thing
