i don't think we've gone backwards really and even if we are the seeds were sowed some time a go and Hodgson is just the unlucky one over seeing the results.

we haven't looked like a team since the mid to late 90's and everything that has followed has been like watching paint dry.

It's hard for any manager as long as the squad must include all the biggest names from the Sky4 clubs. You're not automatically a superior player just because you play for Arsenal or Man Utd, as seen with several in the current squad. Picking from the mid-table clubs will get their fans on board as well.

Hodgson does'nt have to pick the likes of Welbeck, Jones, Smalling, Cleverley, Milner, Wheelchair, Henderson etc. He chooses to.

Every manager keeps picking bench warming dross from those same clubs. Why?

Walcott in 2006 ffs.

if anything this team is probably the one with the most number of players from "non-glamour" sides. and they have had the worst worldcup performance by an england team in a while

because a lot of those bench warmers were the best players when they were at mid-table premierleague sides. unfortunately, these are the best english players

That begs the question: Are England really supposed to be doing much better?

Continually picking the same dislikable ****s that have already failed in the past isn't winning anyone over.

There's no way Jones and Smalling would be there if they were still at a bottom half club, no matter how well they were playing. Whoever else was on United's bench would be there instead. Too many players getting overhyped, overrated and proclaimed the future of England just because of the club they play for.

england probably had the highest average salary in this group. so probably should be performing better. lets not forget, even italy have a lot of players who are only mid-table standard. in the past, the golden generation were probably the highest earners in a number of tournaments. but this is football. if they had a bit more luck, i'm sure they could've done better. they were knocked out in a number of penalty shootouts, and didn't have great refereering luck either, which is vital if you are to go all the way.

it's because there has been this over riding sense of pick the best (biggest) XI by name and hope that a team somehow miraculously forms for the last 10 + years - rather than actually try and build a team.

we've performed no worse than we did at the last WC btw - it's just we had a very kind group last time around and we managed to scrape through. in fact the game against Italy was a much better performance than anything we served up in SA.

jones, smalling, downing, carroll, young, henderson, scott parker, barry, milner, glen johnson, defoe, wright-philips. these are all players who performed well for their mid-table premier league sides, but werent quite good enough to start consistently for a genuine top top premier league side.

i am of the belief that if the likes of baines, jagielka, sterling, barkley, lambert etc got a chance at a top side, a lot of them will struggle to be a genuine starter long term.

england managers always stick with the likes of cole, terry, rio, lampard, gerrard, rooney because these are the guys who have proven over a number of years that they are capable of playing top class football. if we were to get rid of these guys, we would be the stoke city of international football

Agree with this Billy...

i think we sometimes forget how lucky we are though. only 32 nations get to play in the world cup. and from there we usually get to the latter rounds too. there are so many nations who can't even dream of being in our position.

as fans we contribute exactly the same to the national team as a fan of say ukraine does. yet for some reason we place massive expectations on our team when they are doing the best they can. if you think the players are bad, thats not their fault. they've been selected because they are the best there is.

but those players you have listed have been a mainstay in what i would consider a terrible period for English national football - mind numbing boring football and only ever doing enough to scrape past teams we should be beating and folding when faced with decent opposition. i can't believe you are holding these players up as a benchmark!

English players and the PL are probably the most overpaid in the world (not including the oil fueled Middle Eastern ones). There are some absolute cloggers making more in a week than the rest of us do in a year. A lot of it down to owners with no common sense and the old boys club of managers that just keep recycling the same ones because of their "experience ", rather than try to build something, develop talent.
