I liked Erik Lamela before it was cool

Re: Official - Lamela

He was a youngster signed without a preseason alongside his new teammates in a new league trying to speak a new language and was given opportunities from the start as he got 15 minutes against Arsenal, he also started around around Europa league games as well as other appearances in the PL.

It's not perfection that he hasn't started a game at WHL, it's a shame.

Re: Official - Lamela

Same deal as Bale, difference is, Madrid aren't idiots so played him. We're idiots so decided leaving him on the bench with his confidence dwindling by the week was the best course of action, now he's practically a cripple. Only at THFC. Same thing nearly happened with Lloris and he himself has since said he was depressed and was considering putting in a transfer request, you'd have thought AVB would've learnt from that but he's clearly a very stubborn man.

Re: Official - Lamela

I suppose the amount of obscenity in your post indicates how emotional and therefore illogical you were when making this post.
But read the bold bit again.
A player should be in the squad regardless of how unfit he is because of his price tag?
How high must a price tag be to justify this exalted status where fitness and physical condition no longer matters? £10 million? £20 million? £25 million?
Money not only talks but heals apparently.

According to recent times, club protocol over Ade not being in he squad, apparently it is a sackable offence. Besides we put kids on the bench all he time to acclimatise them to the squad. Making them part of the squad, integrating them into the squad, look at what bench Sherwood picked last week. And tell me he could not have had Lamela in there, he doesn't need to play him does he, just make him feel part of the squad.

I honestly do not think he is injured btw. He isn't match fit which is different and should not keep him from being part of the matchday experience.

I honestly, truly, really get the approach AVB chose with Lamela at the start.

Starting Lamela on the left for his first PL game away to City and then dropping him after one more league start after that doesn't fit into anything I can see as a reasonable plan though.

Starting Lamela in that City game and putting Ade on in the second half looked much more like it was part of some internal politics/argument than a sensible plan to help the player(s) and club.

Re: Official - Lamela

From the what is our best XI thread because I watched it and it made me happy and I agree fully with Rossi and it should be in here:

I don't care if it's is against Sheriff, this shows he is a top player in the making

Re: Official - Lamela

Erm...so...with Sandro coming out on Twitter and saying he's NOT injured to clarify that there are other reasons why TS isn't picking him, could it not be the case that Lamela is also NOT injured?

I'm pretty sure we were told Sandro was injured and hence why he wasn't in the squads for the matches post-Liverpool.

Perhaps it's not too much conspiracy-theory to think that there Lamela is simply not being played because TS "doesn't fancy him" :-k

Hasn't this been discussed already? Didn't someone clarify that Sherwood had said he didn't think Sandro was good enough to start at the moment? No real drama in that, in my opinion. The last few games I've seen Sandro play, bless him, he's not exactly been a world beater, so can't blame Sherwood for leaving him out against the likes of WBA, Sunderland and Fulham, to be honest.

Yes it has indeed been discussed - before the Sandro tweet, talk of players like Lamela not being in the squad AND NOT being injured was thrown out as conspiracy BS.

Now Sandro has shown he is not in the squad AND NOT because of injury, suddenly makes it plausible that Lamela is thought of by TS in the same way.

Sandro has not been a world-beater I agree (coming back from injury, plus getting stuck into the "passion" ethos of TS has for my mind made him play poorly recently) but to not have him even in the squad and NOT play him vs Liverpool?? That smacks of something else....

Re: Official - Lamela

I don't think he is, but he's there to see all his old mates as presumably he's not settled over here. Gotta love the **** that goes on around our place.

Re: Official - Lamela

Two cheap (because of nationality) comparisons to Lamela: Di Maria and Pastore.

I feel like I could either write two pages or two lines. I'll go for two lines... What do you guys think?

Re: Official - Lamela

Apparently Lamela is considered in Argentina to be their main no.10 for the next decade...can't remember where I read that though...and it could have been Riquelme who said it..?

Re: Official - Lamela

Sigh. What a missed opportunity. We could have done so much with this lad this season, his injury/adaptation troubles notwithstanding. All of us, actually: the fans, the coaching staff, and even the chairman. As fans, we could have sung his name every game, like we did with Soldado. We could have tried to establish a Sandro-style rapport with the lad - he's got a twitter like after all, via his brother. We could have tried to make him feel more at home than he evidently feels at the moment (why else would he go to bloody Rome in spring?) The coaching staff could have eased him in more, instead of first erratically playing him exclusively in Europe and then throwing him into the pit against City (A V ****ing B), or ignoring him completely because of his supposed 'injury' (same injury Sandro had all this time?) and then mocking his struggle with English in press conferences (our Tim). The chairman cold have signed someone to keep the lad company (he was a 30 million asset, signing some dude he knows for a few million should have been easy enough to do).

We could have done so much to help him settle in. And the reason we should have done all this is because he genuinely seems like the kind of lad who's capable of forming a deep emotional connection with the club he plays for: look at his reaction to being sold by Roma, for example. I get the feeling he needs that sort of connection to perform, to feel appreciated by the people he plays for. He needs support to reach his potential, to come out of his shell, and despite all the hand-wringing we as fans have done over his fate this season, I doubt we, the staff or the board have given him the support he needs to feel at home at Tottenham Hotspur.

Now, this season is likely to go down as the worst of his career, one way or another. Sure, he may end up coming good at the club, and all this will be in the past. But I sincerely doubt we'll have made a good impression on him, regardless of what happens next. And when he eventually leaves, I doubt he'll feel too bad about it. He certainly won't shed tears over his departure, as he apparently did when told that Roma had accepted a bid for him. And for some reason, that cuts the deepest for me amidst this train-wreck of a season we've gone through.

Sigh. What a campaign.

Re: Official - Lamela

Twitter is saying that he was there because Roma have one of the worlds best back injury specialists. And that he has a bad back injury right now.

Thank GHod he isn't in the hands of our medical staff. I'd take Doctor Frankenstein over them.

Think he said it just before he was going to sign for us...

Besides taking the mick, I have heard he is highly regarded back in his homeland. Not starting X1, but in and around the squad for the last year or so

He was known as the Heir to Totti at Roma, and by most accounts the only reason he played wide and not at No. 10 was because Totti held that shirt. They viewed him as a No. 10 in the making.

I suspect that Erik's contract might have a clause about him being developed by Spurs in his favoured position - it wouldn't make sense for his dad to send him to a club at such a formative age who are going to stick him on the wing if the kid is a No. 10 in his head and heart.

Sadly, I'm not at all sure we'll see Erik in a Spurs shirt again, although I seriously hope I'm wrong about that.
